Duchesne pres. of Commercial Club injured in a Thursday accident near Reader corner in Glines. W. Baker 63 suffered severe wounds, other injuries, as car rolled after turning at a right angle. Odekirk received scalp wounds. Baker aimed to secure Blue Mountain rodeo. Delegations met Governor Bloco in Salt Lake urging US 40 surfacing into Basin and fair share of road funds. Road plan includes regraveling, rock asphalt surfacing, and major upgrades east of Fruitland and between Myton, Roosevelt.

Uintah Stake to Serve Meals at UBIC Convention

Uintah stake will charge meals for three days during the U STC arrangements. Meals will be served in the building southwest of the exit on the grounds. Funds raised will defray expenses on the tabernacle stake of flea and seminary.

Uintah FFA Return From Western Trip

Uintah FFA members led by Harold McTindell return from a 2000 mile Western tour. The group visited Zion Canyon Boulder Dam San Diego Expo Los Angeles Beverly Hills Hollywood and San Francisco areas. They faced border checks at Caliente and joined a clam feast at Pasima Beach on their return trip via Reno Salt Lake City and Vernal.

Archie Johnson Recovers at Home After Rooftop Fall

Archie Johnson, counselor in the Uintah stake presidency and teller at the Uintah State Bank, was seriously injured when he fell from a shed roof. He was moved from the hospital to his home on Wednesday and is resting well.

Maughan Home Burns Down On Wednesday

A destructive fire on CG P Maughan's Ashley Canyon farm destroyed sheds the house and most belongings after a hornet nest ignition. Mrs Maughan was away at UBIO business. Gordon Hacking and Herman Roper aided but only a few items were saved. The fire left a blackened patch of ground and the orchard was destroyed.

Uintah County Relief Director Transferred to Balt Lake

Lune director of Uintah relief for months is moved to Balt Lake county to head Works Progress Administration projects there. Mr Lund left last Saturday. The WPA will cover principal work relief projects under 25000 dollars. Edward H Coltharp has been named acting county director and made new appointments in the agency.

Fish Hatchery Improves to Double Output at Whiterocks

Improvements at Whiterocks fish hatchery under FERA labor cost 5028.18 will more than double capacity. Floyd Noel deputy game warden notes cement headgates new ponds gravelling and a new spring water supply. About 2,000,000 young fish hatched. fingerlings to be planted in streams and lakes as streams recover from floods and drought. Fishermen urged cooperation to aid conservation over the next two years.

Wm Smuin Succumbs of Heart Attack

William Smuin a 63 year old Davis ward farmer died of a heart attack after breakfast and a conversation with his wife and daughter. Born October 23 1872 in Tre go county Pennsylvania he moved to Vernal with his parents as a child and lived there his life. He married Eliza Kendall in 1891 and they had 13 children nine living. Survived by sons Hyrum Gilbert Gordon Alvin Leif and daughters Sarah Johnson Iva Hollenbeck Katie and Edna Smuin.

Uintah County FERA Labor Projects Provide Broad Benefits

Uintah County reports extensive FERA labor benefiting communities through sidewalk and tennis court work, sewer improvements, and road repairs. Direct relief through FEA exceeds $111,000, with Vernal city sewer system the major project costing over $2.6 million in FERA labor and more than $195,000 paid by the city.

A meeting is scheduled in Vernal for August 10 of all Vernal grazing district grazing officers. The gathering is called to consider grazing permits and related district matters.

Boatmen Return from Salmon River Trip in Low Water

Frank Swain Alton Hatch Route Mowry and Bus Hatch Vernal river explorers came back Saturday from a Salmon river voyage hindered by very low water and worn boat bottoms. Dr R G Frazier of Bingham and W J Farhal of Lark joined. boats left on banks to repair for a high water attempt next year amid submerged rocks and canyon dangers.

Vernal CCC Camp North of Fair Grounds

The Vernal CCC camp will be located on land north of the county fair grounds after the city of Vernal purchased land for a street extension. Bus Yatchin oversees construction of a mess hall administration building and barracks valued at about 25000 dollars, with contracts made this Thursday morning. Adding the land to the fair ground will spare the grandstand and racetrack from disturbance and keep them available for fairs and rodeos.

Vernal Rodeo Set for September At Uintah County Fair

Vernal plans a three day rodeo at the Uintah county fair grounds September 12 13 and 14 under manager Guy Rise Wyoming with CCO camp land purchase shifting use away from the original fair grounds. Committee members A R Douglas and B H Stringham promise full details at tonight’s meeting as Mer Fife continues to entertain locals with high class shows.

Willow Creek Boy Loses Hand In Accident

Jerry Hatch, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Roy Hatch of Willow Creek, sustained a severe injury when a rope caught his right hand as his saddle horse spooked a mule. Part of the hand was severed, leaving only skin and tendons. He was taken to Vernal and is resting in a local hospital.

Half the US 40 highway to be surfaced within 30 days

Albert Slaugh of Comet Motors reports over half of US 40 from the Utah-Colorado line to Craig will be surfaced and oiled within 30 days. He notes Vernal to Jen sen is the worst stretch, with heavy truck damage there, and says Craig to Maybell 30 miles will be oiled within 10 days.

Commissioners Set County Levy On Wednesday

County commissioners set the 1935 tax levy at district school 145 state 100 county road 25 county general 25 general indebtedness 28 bond and sinking 31 poor 05 library 03 Vernal city 160 and livestock rates. They plan to assume welfare work with state agencies. a special Aug 6 meeting will align welfare members from the county with the committee of three Democrats and three Republicans.

Sanitary Project for UBIC Improves Convention Comfort

The FERA sanitary project for the UBIC uses the $1000 appropriation to construct 70 toilets in Fort Duchesne, enabling the August convention. State health authorities ruled public aid barred delays, and toilets were to be completed by Saturday night. Public cooperation is urged to keep facilities sanitary.

Cow on Highway Sparks Wreck in Bennion Corner

A cow on US 40 near Bennion corner Ver nal caused a serious crash Thursday night at about 10 pm. Elmer Merrill 19 of Naples ward drove his father's new car into a barrow pit after the impact, damaging headlights fender and engine hood. No one else was injured. Night Marshal Frank Swain killed the animal due to injuries. Ownership of the cow remained undetermined.

Missionaries Visit in Vernal

Two former companions of Mr. Ruth Bennion visited Vernal en route to homes in St. Anthony Idaho. Elder Mitten and Miss Mary Jones attended Palmyra Hill Cumorah unveiling July 21 24, were released, and traveled six days to Vernal. They met local families and noted companions' reports before continuing to Salt Lake City and then Idaho.
