Carter Oil Reports Show In Ruth Nelson No. 1 Well

Carter Oil Company officials report a show of oil at Ruth Nelson No 1 wildcat eight miles south and one mile west of Vernal in Utah section 33 township 5 south range 21 east Salt Lake Meridian. The 5482 foot well tested 5468 to TD with a one hour test yielding 25 feet of oil and gas cut drilling fluid and about 10 feet of heavy black oil. The show is considered merely exploratory and the wells are shut down awaiting orders on continuing testing with drilling to contract depth.

Virtus McConkelle Livestock Show Extends Consignors Deadline

The Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show and Sale extends consignor deadline from April 3 to Saturday April 24 due to low awareness. Calf scramble donors cover one third value, winner pays two thirds when received in fall. sheep and hog scrambles awarded as gifts. New bylaws expand the elective body to 12 and set officer terms to three years. Nutritious attendance urged for the May 7 election in front of the grandstand.

National Guard Unit Organized At Vernal

Vernal to receive a National Guard unit after site inspections for an armory and headquarters. General West and officers met Mayor Stringham and civic leaders at the airport and a Hotel Vernal luncheon. Johnston and Ashton named to head the unit, sworn in Salt Lake City May 3, with 105 personnel and a $32,000 payroll.

Vernalites Clean Up Town As Drive Enters Second Week

Vernal's cleanup drive sponsored by the local Jaycees enters its second week with sweeping rakes and fires. Citizens show campaign spirit as sales rise for cleaning supplies and paints. Entries pour in from elementary students for a contest limited to ages 14 and under with prizes of 10, 5, and 2. Judges from civic clubs will award winners based on posters essays and poems submitted with names and ages clearly listed.

Stake Conference Dates Set By Uintah Stake Leader

Arch ie Johnson stake president announced a two day Stake Conference for Uintah Stake with general authorities Milton R. Hunter and J Garff to attend. A welfare meeting is planned Saturday at 630 pm at the Vernal Seminary with Priesthood leadership at 8 pm. General conference sessions at the Stake Tabernacle Sunday start 10 am and 2 pm, and Vernal Seminary graduation occurs Sunday evening at 8. Mrs. Manwaring returned home from the L D S hospital with her son Everett and relatives to assist in her recovery.

Milk Contracts Awarded By Dairy Group

The Uinta Central Dairy Cooperative Association awarded contracts for A grade milk to Calder's Dairy Piedmont Dairy of Vernal and Anderson Home Dairy of Roosevelt. Calder's also won cream and manufacturing milk. Prices were bid highest, with public contract prices not released. Eldon Billings noted a price rise for cream and manufacturing milk negotiated in mid March. The association will staff a liaison at the Calder plant to manage deliveries and resolve plant issues. Directors discussed supporting the Union High School near Roosevelt and road improvements into Lapoint Tridell to aid transport. Monthly meetings will begin with the first hour open to members. About 200 producers are enrolled.

Funeral Services Held Thursday For Mrs Clarkson

Funeral services for Mrs Floretta Green Clarkson 61 died April 11 in Ashley after a lingering illness were held Thursday at the Ashley Ward chapel. Conducted by Fred C. Anderson the service included invocations and musical numbers. Burial followed at Vernal Memorial Cemetery. Clarkson born July 4, 1887 in Wellington moved to Utah County as a child and married David Tolliver in 1906.

Readership Survey Postponed by Utah Association Leaders

The Vernal Express and Roosevelt Standard readership surveys are postponed indefinitely after the Utah State Press Association board and Brigham Young University marketing head Professor Weldon J Taylor decide that advance reader notice would invalidate the surveys and risk the broader research and promotion program. The delay affects Vernal Roosevelt areas and preserves Springville American Fork and Heber City data.
