Interstate road designation talk at Vernal meeting
The Vernal group discussed designating U S Highway 40 as an interstate route. Utah officials plan to widen and resurface the Twists road west of Vernal and eliminate bad dump. Engineering on the Vernal Jonsen road is two thirds complete and will be advertised upon completion. A $17,000 Silver Creek Junction improvement is planned to lengthen the turnoff road west of the junction.

Thieves broke into Clark's Welding and Mechanics shop by a west window Monday evening. Deputy Sheriff Carl Staley said $50 in cash was taken from a cash box while checks remained. The burglary was found Tuesday morning when Jim Clark opened the shop.

Polio Vaccination Begins in Uintah County Schools
Polio vaccination for first and second graders in Uintah County will start next week with 667 eligible children receiving the first of a three shot series on April 20 under the direction of Ray E. Spendlove and Dr. Herb Fowler. Vaccinations will be given in schools at no charge. a limited amount of vaccine will be available to the public afterward for 12 to 15 dollars per series. The program, supported by federal licensing of the Salk vaccine and supplied by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, aims to protect against paralytic polio and hopes wider availability next year. Also noted are plans to vaccinate children not in the program and two local residents traveling for medical checks.

Highway 40 Members Discuss Tourist Booth Plans
U S Highway 40 members from Heber City to Idaho Springs Colorado will meet in Vernal this Saturday evening to hear a proposal by the Vernal Chamber of Commerce tourism committee to set up information booths at Silver Creek Junction Utah and west of Idaho Springs Colorado. Teens Arrested in Vernal Cigarette Theft Behind Hotel Vernal
Deputy Sheriff Carl Staley and Trooper Mack Helm arrested several youths this week after a tip that one was selling cigarettes by the carton. The theft involved 300 to 400 dollars worth of cigarettes from a car parked behind the Hotel Vernal on March 16. The vehicle belonged to L. J. Seaton of Salt Lake City.

Laughlin Applies for Gas Franchise in Utah Cities

A PSC hearing is set for April 26 to decide which applicant will serve the three communities. Dave Rubinoff and team played for about twelve hundred people in Vernal on Tuesday. He performed at Uintah High School with pianist Homer Phillips and manager Ralph Perssons.
