H J Corlelssen Utah Road Commission chairman and Colorado Governor Ed Johnson will testify before a Senate Public Works Subcommittee in support of an Interstate highway linking Salt Lake City and Denver. Rep Clair R Hopkins Vernal Chamber of Commerce Road Committee chair says the Utah-Colorado effort emerged at a Salt Lake City road meeting this week. Interstate road designation talk at Vernal meeting

The Vernal group discussed designating U S Highway 40 as an interstate route. Utah officials plan to widen and resurface the Twists road west of Vernal and eliminate bad dump. Engineering on the Vernal Jonsen road is two thirds complete and will be advertised upon completion. A $17,000 Silver Creek Junction improvement is planned to lengthen the turnoff road west of the junction.

United Nations Rep to Address Uintah Club

Mrs. Lorena B. Hahn, U S representative on the UN Commission on the Status of Women, will address the Uintah Knife and Fork Club in Hotel Vernal on Saturday evening, April 23. Sheriff Herb Snyder reports March 1 theft of $750 in checks and cash from Uintah Rexall Drug safe. Last week a cigar box near Victory Park yielded $265 in checks to Miss Walburg B Laws of Roosevelt.

Clark's Welding Burglarized on East Highway 40

Thieves broke into Clark's Welding and Mechanics shop by a west window Monday evening. Deputy Sheriff Carl Staley said $50 in cash was taken from a cash box while checks remained. The burglary was found Tuesday morning when Jim Clark opened the shop.

Polio Vaccination Begins in Uintah County Schools

Polio vaccination for first and second graders in Uintah County will start next week with 667 eligible children receiving the first of a three shot series on April 20 under the direction of Ray E. Spendlove and Dr. Herb Fowler. Vaccinations will be given in schools at no charge. a limited amount of vaccine will be available to the public afterward for 12 to 15 dollars per series. The program, supported by federal licensing of the Salk vaccine and supplied by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, aims to protect against paralytic polio and hopes wider availability next year. Also noted are plans to vaccinate children not in the program and two local residents traveling for medical checks.

Highway 40 Members Discuss Tourist Booth Plans

U S Highway 40 members from Heber City to Idaho Springs Colorado will meet in Vernal this Saturday evening to hear a proposal by the Vernal Chamber of Commerce tourism committee to set up information booths at Silver Creek Junction Utah and west of Idaho Springs Colorado. A subcommittee will present findings on costs and maintenance. Attending will be Henderson, chairman. Warren Belcher, Jack Allred, Privetts Smith and Ken Sowards. A. W. Roberts of Steamboat Springs, Utah Colorado U S Highway 40 Association president, called the meeting, with Henry B. Millecam Sr. of Vernal a national director of the association expected to attend.

Echo Park Promotion Trip Heads to Washington

L Y Siddoway will leave Vernal by plane Sunday for Washington D C to work on promotion of Echo Park Dam. He is sent by the Uintah County Colorado River Development Committee. Vernal Rod and Gun Club to hold a trap shoot at their range north of Vernal Sunday starting at 12 am. Shooters seek hams bacon and steaks. Parking meters on Vernal Avenue and Main Street are being removed to widen parking lanes by two feet.

Teens Arrested in Vernal Cigarette Theft Behind Hotel Vernal

Deputy Sheriff Carl Staley and Trooper Mack Helm arrested several youths this week after a tip that one was selling cigarettes by the carton. The theft involved 300 to 400 dollars worth of cigarettes from a car parked behind the Hotel Vernal on March 16. The vehicle belonged to L. J. Seaton of Salt Lake City.

Laughlin Applies for Gas Franchise in Utah Cities

Loren Laughlin of Goodland Kansas seeks a natural gas distribution franchise in Vernal Monticello and Moab. A PSC hearing is set for April 26 to decide which applicant will serve the three communities. Franchises were previously granted to Laughlin in Moab and Monticello, while Vernal granted franchises to Laughlin and Greeley Gas Company of Colorado. The PSC will determine which party may operate the system.

Upper Colorado River Storage Project Bill Advances in Senate

Senate debate opened on the Upper Colorado River Storage Project bill led by Chairman Clinton P. Anderson who hopes floor action within ten days. A opposing report by Senator Kuchel and another opposing Echo Park Dam by Senator Neuberger accompanied the measure. Shipments of the new Salk Polio Vaccine to Uintah Basin physicians are due in the next few days, but today none is available. The public may obtain shots at local physicians’ offices as soon as vaccines arrive. Three shots complete the immunization for a $10.00 fee.

Frontier Air To Begin Vernal Grand Junction Service

The Civil Aeronautics Board approves Frontier Air Lines to launch Vernal to Grand Junction flights 15 and 12 effective May 1, linking Vernal with Grand Junction Salt Lake City Albuquerque Phoenix and other points with quick connections to the mid southwest. Existing Vernal routes to Wyoming Montana and North Dakota through flights 4 and 23 remain, with schedule times noted, and flights 5 and 6 between Rock Springs and Denver reinstated to improve Vernal Deaver travel and eastern connections.

Rubinoff charms Vernal crowds with violin recital

Dave Rubinoff and team played for about twelve hundred people in Vernal on Tuesday. He performed at Uintah High School with pianist Homer Phillips and manager Ralph Perssons. The morning assembly delighted students and staff with stories of his Russia to America journey. The matinee drew roughly 709 attendees while the evening show reached about 502. Rubinoff then left for Craig, Colorado.
