More than five hundred people gathered Sunday at the Vernal CCC camp to celebrate the fourth anniversary with a band concert led by Prof. Loyd Winn, community singing read by Frank J. Kennard, and an outdoor lunch. Captain A B Woolums presided, with talks by James M Orr Jr and others. Darrell Bastian performed a baritone solo. E. Cromblett won first prize for an essay, Preston Hale presenting the award. Uintad State Bank funded prizes. a movie capped the day with a camp evening showing.

Woolley Oratorical Contest Set for UH Auditorium
The H Walter Woolley extemporaneous speech contest for Uintah high school students will be held in the auditorium during a special student assembly on Wednesday April 14. Public urged by Director Lloyd Winn to attend Uintah High School band concert Wednesday evening at the Uintah High School gym. Admission is free. The program aims to secure a superior rating to enter the band contest at Price May 12 to 14. Clarence Hawkins of the University of Utah will rate the band and soloists, as no competing band is available locally.

City seeks North sewer outlet for Chapel in Vernal
At a Vernal City Council meeting a delegation from Vernal First ward led by Bishop Pontha Calder petitioned to extend the sewer system to the North side of the First Ward chapel. Mayor R C Cooper pledged a project for WPA funds and city matching funds pending approval. A North part delegation asked for larger culverts for irrigation streams and officials agreed to inspect streams and adopt a zoning ordinance to curb undesirable construction.

A church financial report showed expenditures over 8.1 million dollars for 1936 with over 2 million for world missions. The security plan reported aid to more than 24,000 people and donations of goods to the needy. Albert E. Bowen was named an Apostle to fill a council vacancy, with George Q. Mortis and M. M. I. A. appointing replacements.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Glines chapel for Thomas Mantle who died Monday morning at the home of Mrs. Jay Pack. Bishop John B. later officiated with John Hodgkinson and William E. A. Theodore John, Vernal LDS Seminary building committee chair, says a $16,000 contract for the new two story seminary will be set within two weeks. Other committee members Byron Goodrich and Ray Duke, with plans approved by Uintah stake presidency, were involved. Architect Leonard C. Nelson of East Lake City designed the two story structure with office, library, and meeting rooms.

Dr A C Boyle Jr of Dinosaur National Monument says housing and feeding at the camp will end April 16. 66 men now fed and housed will rise to 80 from local WPA rolls. two 10 day shifts, 40 hours weekly. Wages move to 40 to 55 dollars monthly. prior pay was 32 to 45 cents per hour with 120 hours monthly. Some men plan to board others, rent homes and farm land. The change aims to better employ Ashley Valley men and broaden payroll, making the monument’s payroll the largest in Uintah county.
