Destructive fire destroys frame houses on Main Street

A Sunday early morning fire swept through nine frame buildings on Main Street Lima, starting in Richards carriage shop and spreading to Townsend Moser undertakers, Kibby and Martin properties. Firefighters contained the blaze but losses totaled thousands with multiple insurers and plans to rebuild brick fronts.

Two Patriots and a Code Duel Stir Incident in Boswell

A meeting under the code is planned between Col. J. C. McGuire of Mobile and John Spies of Boswell over a Davis affair. Spies recalls Mrs. Davis gave him a flowers bouquet. McGuire denies it. The dispute sparked by a Courier report fuels a promised duel with Harris as second.

Bid Solicitation for School House in District 7 Township

The notice asks for bids for building a school house in District 7. Each bid must disclose all interested parties and include a guarantee that a contract will be entered if accepted. The Blaine managers held a meeting in New York last Friday with prominent attendees including Gov. Foster of Ohio and Senator Miller of New York. Whitelaw Reid was also present.

Rope Walker Harry Leslie Dies After Wound From 1876

A Kingston Virginia rope walker Harry Leslie died recently from a head wound received in 1876 when he saved a child from danger during a Richmond rope act. He steadied the child and kept his balance but struck his head on a window as he descended. The crowd cheered as he saved the girl though fatally wounded. Political notes include wool growers at Chicago pledging to restore the 1867 wool tariff and parties unsure how platforms will reflect that stance. The Republicans favor restoration. Democrats are shown opposing it in the current House.
