Trade in Idols and Public Notices Across the Era

A brisk Birmingham trade in small glass idols priced at thirty seven cents each and four dollars in Birmingham, a proposed William Tyndale monument costing 20000 to 25000, and a Nevada saloon landlady who swears she only flirts with the regulars. Also notes on San Francisco dress plans, West Virginia Republican gains, a Chester county drowning linked to shared dreams, and other assorted vignettes from national life.

Women’s Christian Temperance Union Meets Monthly

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union holds meetings on the first Monday of each month at 4 o’clock in the M E Church lecture room. Presiding is Mrs E E Marble with Mrs M J McFadden as secretary. A village in central Illinois that once had one saloon now has four after licensing at $200. The high village license contrasts with Cincinnati’s $500 city rate, illustrating license as a restraint on rum selling.

Will They be Taken in Again From the Troy Telegram

A skeptical editorial notes that reform promises of 1883 deceived voters and accuses the Democrats of wolf in sheep's clothing. It cites government spending on customs houses at Dunkirk Beaufort and Burlington with tiny returns and mocks political deceit. A separate Racine court report says Miss Albrecht slapped and clawed at Mink, who called her a liar. The New Orleans Picayune notes a prediction that July 20 will be the hottest day, aimed at quelling rival picnic groups.

Freeman Roiled By Religion Murder Case Reaches Court

Charles F. Freeman, who four years ago killed his daughter claiming divine mission, faced a Supreme Court review. Indicted for murder and adjudged insane, the indictment was filed and he was sent to Danvers Insane Hospital. Certification of restored reason prompted trial judges to consider continued confinement. Freeman testified about his religious experiences and belief in doing God's will, but the judge upheld insanity and ordered his return to jail pending habeas corpus.
