A lyrical tale of a youth chasing a wondrous maiden who is really the capricious winding stream. The poem blends desire, nature, and fate in dreamy, measured verse.
In August 1863 near Brown's Ferry Alabama two Union soldiers Frank Allen and Uncle Tommy Columber covertly cross the Tennessee River aboard a raft made from fence rails. They meet Confederate pickets, dine with them and trade horseflesh promises, then return safely to Union lines. Frank is later killed at Ebenezer Church while serving. Uncle Tommy completes service and returns home.
