A granite monument will be placed over Abraham Lincoln's father's grave in Pleasant Grove township eight miles southeast of Mattoon Illinois. Robert Lincoln donated 100 toward the fund. A Chinese chart of the heavens from Paris library shows 1450 stars matched to modern observations. A Longfellow verse was sent to Columbus schoolchildren on his birthday. Congress adjournment remarks compare the congress to a shipwrecked man losing everything but reputation.
Mrs Hayes will receive a pair of ivory silk curtains embroidered with sunflowers and pomegranates from the Ladies Temperance League of Ottawa Illinois. The ivory silk is cross banded with brown plush and lined with pale blue silk. The curtains are valued at $1200 and destined for her Fremont house.
The temperance initiative produced a life size portrait by Huntington of Mrs Hayes. He leaves for Washington at 1 PM and is expected to reach the capital tomorrow morning with crowds likely to greet the presidential train. He offers no hint on his inaugural address and keeps counsel on Cabinet composition.

He marries a farms wife, endures harsh labor, is beaten into submission, loses the farm and turns to politics. The narrator reflects that experience teaches more than marriage.
