While discussing the subject of bettering our county and communities by introducing new industries and promoting education, would it not be in order to lead people to habits of industry and economy in the use of time. Our streets are crowded every day by loiterers who sit around store boxes and steps, gazing about and talking idly about nothing.

An 18th century tale contrasts French trials of spider silk with an English effort by Stillbers to weave cloth from tropical spiders. Beaumur and Reaumur questioned viability, while Stillbers’ method uses 5000 cases, 60 F room heat, and solvents to produce a rough silk-like thread from 25,000 cocoons for 800 French leagues of length, noting high costs and uncertain future.
