Why the magnetic needle points to the North

Professor C. T. Patterson explains that the earth behaves as a magnet, with magnetic poles inclined to geographic poles by about 23 degrees. The northern magnetic pole lies near the Arctic Circle, while needles at San Francisco and Calais deviate from true north, dipping differently and indicating a region rather than a fixed point. The earth’s magnetism is compared to a long magnet, and future studies of dynamo electric illuminations may uncover broader magnetism truths.
