The Findlay Ohio Courier recounts an Ohio tale from Blanchard township where earthen mounds hid rumored wealth guarded by an ancient spell. Two men Ben and John dug near a walnut tree, a demon appeared during the dig, and a pot of gold vanished, leaving a haunted memory. The narrator reflects on conscience and a future judgment seen while alone with memory and time.
In a March tale of rural hardship Addy Walters and her sister Kitty save their farm by selling eight barrels of russet apples. A bold plan leads to a town venture, a Harmful mortgage repaid, and a surprise marriage proposal from Willis Avery after a profitable sale. The second narrative recallsRobert Dale Owen and the downfall of his belief in Spiritualist Katie King following a fraud exposure that shattered his faith and impacted his later life.
The Amherst Agricultural College farm grew an enormous squash lifting 4120 pounds. The vine measured a 12 to 15 foot main branch with about 4600 roots and as many as 19 miles of roots in total. Col. Clark notes the plant’s growth slowed only by its immense burden and visible effort.
A battered harbor scene unfolds as a Black man reads an advertisement when a goat bursts through a newspaper amidships. He recounts being dumped ashore after the third boat to miss its bite and asks if he will recover. The Courier-Journal notes the goat still lives.
The Hamilton delegation receives a sharp note from Gov. Allen's private secretary in the Dispatch. He calls the Cincinnati delegates in disarray praising only a few men while labeling many as bummers with enough whiskey to disgrace them. He argues Cincinnati should not be represented at conventions if its delegates cannot improve.
