A long read of late 19th century fashion tips covers pokes bonnets and hats with velvet plush beaver or felt bases, feather adornments, ribbons and tassels, plus ornamental birds and pins. Also included are homey notes on grape pickles jelly cakes and bee husbandry observations.
Rebecca Bates died last Saturday in Scituate Massachusetts at eighty eight. Her cousin Abbie Bates, eighty, survives. The 1812 British scare involved the pair hiding behind rocks on the beach and sounding the roll call with fire and drum to scare off troops from a landing. Ohio Legislature desks have fragile locks that require keys. the Sergeant at Arms warns he will use force if members do not return borrowed keys.
The Garfield Memorial Committee invites Hon. James G. Blaine to give the commemorative address in the House of Representatives in Washington. Blaine, close to Garfield and trusted by the President, is deemed highly qualified for the memory tribute.
Governor and Mrs Blackburn entertained about a thousand guests at a quaint old-fashioned quilting party. The event featured a finished quilt by young people and danced reels and jigs performed to darky fiddlers. Dr C C Graham of Louisville, aged ninety eight, surprised with energetic pigeon-wing steps.
An elderly former Kentuckian named Woods, once wealthy with fifty enslaved people, now lives in Cincinnati supported by a charitable Black man and two former Woods slaves who remain grateful. The trio were separated at auction, repurchased, and reunited under Woods, who now enjoys a serene old age. Also recounted is a Long Island widow arranging a rapid marriage for her grieving husband to her younger sister to comfort her children, a Denver stage robber who escaped handcuffs near Kalamazoo but was subdued by a lone woman passenger, Mrs. Smithson of Denver, saving the marshal’s life.
The Philadelphia mayor urges replacing gas lamps with electric lights after a successful experiment. Chestnut street reportedly shines much brighter at about one twelfth the cost of gas, signaling a potential citywide switch.
After years of caterpillar damage Maine orchards recover with a large crop this year. Farmers receive about $3 per barrel in the orchard and celebrate the caterpillar return as a boon to yields.
In Independence Colorado John Malloy and Edward Patton fired on store windows in the town. They grabbed a saloon and drove out guests, then held the constable’s posse at bay. A citizen group intervened and killed both men.
The Newark cashier Baldwin acted as the financial backer of a theater and caused substantial losses to many investors. He funded a church and theater, and alternated giving to charitable objects with gambling, draining other people's money.
A Memphis tinsmith used a hidden battery and a clock in his shop to answer questions by bell rings. Half the city was fooled by the device whose answers seemed accurate. He finally exposed the trick after four days of public delight.
A story from Oneida County New York recounts Sylvester Smith a bad man who ties a cow to a shed and leaves it to starve for seven weeks ending in death. He later falls ill with a nameless disease and cannot eat, dying slowly after exhaustive medical efforts fail.
The Eastern press greets Hon. B. H. Brewster as Attorney General with praise. New York Sun calls him an able man and ready orator. World lauds him as able and distinguished with courage on constitutional questions. Times notes test in Star-route disgust. Tribune cites legal reputation. Herald commends his character and broad respect. The selection promises vigorous prosecution of Star route conspirators and full government effort to punish Treasury robbers.
Pall Mall Gazette reports Empress Eugenie influenced Napoleons decisions leading to the 1870 Berlin march ending at Sedan and war against Russia. Count Kisseler notes she declared the 1857 war while the Czar’s letter was coldly received. London coroner notes brain congestion as verdict for a child’s death. children described as precocious.
Henry W. Grady argues in Harper's Magazine for Southern farmers to raise their own bread and meat, grow corn and grasses, and limit cotton. He cites examples from North Carolina and Georgia showing higher profits, reduced mortgage risk, and tenants improving rents when farms are managed with diversified crops and shared credit from estate stores.
