Origin of fairs and cattle shows in New York state
The movement began with Albany merchant Elkanah Watson around 1810. Boston declined aid, but New York lawmakers in 1819 set aside 10 000 dollars yearly for six years to aid agriculture and manufacturing. Washington county organized a county agricultural society in 1818, and Salem hosted the first recorded fair in 1822 with plowing matches and a church address. Earlier fairs occurred in Argyle Greenwich Hebron Granville Whitehall and Kingsbury. Prizes were modest and total awards around 100.
