National Drill to be Washington's big 1887 spectacle
From Washington Regular Correspondent Aprilst 1887. The National Drill to be held late May will be the greatest massed display of civic military companies ever seen. Nine days of contests at the White Lot near the White House will feature infantry artillery cavalry and zouave tactics with crews from across the country. Prizes total 26500 with color stands medals and plate trophies. The drill runs May 25 to Decoration Day and will include grand parades and illuminated grounds each evening. Washington promises a lasting citywide attraction and potential permanent national drill status attracted by its monuments and nearby historic sites.
