Steamboating on the Ohio in its early glory of 1840s

The Ohio River steamers peaked from 1840 to 1855 with hundreds of side-wheelers built at Pittsburgh and along the Ohio headwaters. The Pittsburgh Cincinnati Packet line ran about twenty five vessels, racing on the river and earning fortunes, while stern wheelers later drew mixed opinions from river men and crews. Gambling and lively river life defined the era as boats burned sunk and profits rode high.
