A large Friday ceremony in Van Buren honored nineteen men who left on a special 9:20 train to Louisville to join Uncle Sam's new federal army. The parade included students, old soldiers, and a band, with Red Cross baskets and cheers as families bid farewell.

Forrest D Higgins son of Mrs Monroe Leach 313 White Avenue writes from France dated Sept 2 resolving who was first Grant County boy to join U S troops Higgins with the 28th U S Regiment says arrival in France was in June four days before any other unit giving the Marion boy the honor This statement settles the controversy and confirms Higgins as the first Grant County soldier in France according to the Leader Tribune.
