Sheriff Wright Surprises Town With Night Beer Raid

Sheriff Ollie Wright conducted an unannounced visit to alleged blind tiger joints in Vanuren. At Barnes residence on Vine street, deputies recovered over fifty bottles of beer hidden under flooring after a tense search. Barnes was seized and released on bond as the case awaited his lawyer’s return for Monday’s hearing.

Landess Woman Returns After Leaving Home

Mrs Creviston of Landess left her husband after sending a note claiming unfaithfulness and went to Erie Pa and Indianapolis. She purchased goods at the Boston Store for about 98.10 and obtained 20 from her husband’s credit. She reportedly planned to go to her father’s death in Erie before returning home with her husband.

John Howard Buys Farm East of Town

John Howard purchases the 40 acre J. T. Stackhouse farm east of town. Stackhouse also acquires the business block now housing the Star Theatre in a separate deal. The transactions were brokered by FE L. Pierson Real Estate Agency.

Van Buren Considers A Community Building

At the Van Buren Town Board meeting the plan for a new town hall shifts to a community building. The design includes meeting rooms, telephone facilities, farmer bulletins, restrooms, a women’s attendants area, and spaces for country visitors with horse hitching. The project aims to use tax funds for broad town benefit and encourage civic pride.

Orville Hodson Caught After Drug Store Robbery

Oliver Harris 22, known as Orville Hodson, admits robbery of a drug store where he was employed and fought two policemen. He claims his father is John Wordson, a farmer near Van Buren Indiana, and his father in law Paul Bainbridge in Louisville. Rewards totaling 3000 were offered for his capture. He took 85 from the cash drawer. His past in 1912 is noted locally.

Leaf Train Schedule Changes Ahead of Expo Arrival

A slight schedule change for the west bound Commercial Traveler No. 5 of the Clover Leaf road takes effect March 14. The train will arrive in St. Louis about an hour earlier in the evening to better connect with west bound trains and serve passengers heading to the Panama Pacific exposition. The railroad plans to handle a large portion of exposition traffic and is making preparations.

Preparation for Grant county corn contest meeting

County Agent Crane calls for representative Grant county boys to meet at the courthouse in Marilon at ten tomorrow to organize the one acre corn contest for the coming year. Farm institute presidents also convene at two. Last year Van Buren township had no entrants. Purdue trips were awarded to county boys.

Funeral for Dr He Blacks Held in Rossburg

Dr He Blacks former Grant county resident died at his Rossburg Ohio home after heart trouble. Funeral at Rossburg home then on the Pennsylvania lines to Mario n and Van Buren cemetery. Survived by widow a son Dr G E Black Dayton two daughters Mrs Walter Hinermian Rossburg and Mrs K E Replogle Versalles plus Mrs Lloyd Wicks Fort Wayne and two sisters in Van Buren and Detroit and Maries in laws.

Smith Glen K. Smith of Fairmount township was elected county chairman of the Prohibition party at a convention in the circuit court. O S Malton Swayze was elected secretary.
