James S Paxton Passes At Van Buren Indiana

James S Paxton son of Jonas S and Mary Paxton was born November 20 1837 in Rush county Indiana and died February 26 1910 at his home in Van Buren aged 77 years 2 months 27 days He lived most of his life in the area and served as postmaster and in the town council He married Martha Boxell in 1857 and had four children He was later widowed and married Mary Anne Goldsberry in 1905 He joined the M E Church early and the IOOF lodge in 1893 He is survived by his wife three sisters two sons and grandchildren Funeral services were held February 28 at the M E church and he was buried in Van Buren cemetery

Revival Effort Gains Interest at M. E. Church

Revival services at the M. E Church draw about 120 from Warren as the chorus led by Bessie Work delivers strong music. New converts share ringing testimonies and a special meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon as Rev. Blocker preaches practical truth.

Petition Seeks Local Option Election in Gas City

A petition with 326 signed supporters requests a local option election in Gas City. The drive by dry advocates led by attorney John F. Linn gathered signatures quickly, but the county commissioners refused to act as the filing was not five days before their meeting. the matter goes to the April session. Among signatories are John L. Thompson, Edgar McClary, Robert F. Puer, and John Linn.

Grant County Poor Asylum was visited February 19 by Mrs. Julian Smith and Mrs. Lena McDonggle. There are 48 men and 28 women. inmates mostly recovered from grippe. Religious services are held biweekly. Grant County Jail was visited February 19 with 31 prisoners. The Grant County Orphanage Home hosted dinner for 45 children and reported excellent condition. Children ate meat cabbage potatoes bread and butter. warm clothing plenty.

Mrs August Bollhoefer died February 24 1915 aged 89 years 3 months 28 days After a long illness she passed from la grippe and la grippe like autumn cold She and her husband helped pioneer Grant county Indiana moving there in 1869 They had four children and she left a husband three children five grandchildren and one great grandchild She was a member of St Joseph Reformed church Her death is noted with praise for a long faithful life

Landess to Move Candy Firm to Marion About May

E W Landess longtime Van Buren resident will relocate his family to Marion around May 1 to focus on the wholesale candy business run with his nephew. He has a varied career from teaching and retail to farming and livestock before expanding into wholesale candy at Marion.

County approves $20,000 loan through Marion banks

Final negotiations for a $20,000 loan to the county were completed Saturday with the Marion National Bank purchasing two notes for $10,000 each at six percent interest. Bids also came from Ger. Webster Jr. and Marion State Bank. The notes mature in sixty days and warrants payments will begin the following Saturday March 6.

W. E. Williams Loses Contest for Prosecuting Attorney

After a week of ballot counting under Judge Joseph Kabb in Grant circuit court the contest between David M. Bell and Wilbur E. Williams for prosecuting attorney ended. Belwan declared the winner by a 62 vote plurality with several recount tallies shown as Williams 4344 Bell 4335 then 439 and 4337 and 4304 4314 and 4286 4348.
