A Tuesday morning send off in Upland honors sixty new U.S. servicemen. Good music and speeches mark the event as orations and chorus performances lift spirits and keep home fires burning while the troops depart for service.
A large crowd in Van Buren saw sixty Grant County conscription district No. 2 registrants depart for Camp Taylor Kentucky. Speakers included Rev Barrett and Hon T B Dicken with patriotic music led by Robert Morris. no substitutes were used as all sixty men attended.
A Van Buren resident, Jonathan Kelley, was struck and killed by an interurban car near Corey Cemetery east of town. Motor man Clyde Herbst and Conductor Charles Henschley were in charge. Kelley attempted to cross the track and died almost instantly. Remains were brought to Van Buren. coroner and doctor notified.
