Mr J B Fuller of the Coit Alber Chautauquas arrives to promote the Van Buren Chautauqua five day series. The circuit expects a record year in 1916 with fine weather. The closing number features Leonid Samo loft with a chorus of assisting artists Vivian Holt Jessica Symonds and Lillian Rosedale.
H A Davis & Co, progressive furniture dealers, completed several improvements this week. A raised display floor enhances street and vehicle view of the showroom. A roller rack for linoleum patterns adds convenience for buyers and clerks, showcasing items as they appear on the floor.
Mr and Mrs John Price and daughter of Warrington were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Bert Harvey. This was Price s first visit to Van Buren since the old bear park on East Main street. The Howard home sites now stand where the park once operated. Mr H H Spangler and family of Shirley Ind with Ross and Lela Spangler also visited friends here. Spangler was a Van Buren merchant years ago.
Prizes awarded at the Fourth of July event include multiple champions in track and field events such as High Jump won by Austin Ferguson and Standing Broad Jump by Austin Ferguson again. Various races feature winners like Alva Vardaman in Sack Race and Isverett Shrock in Wheelbarrow and Whistle Race with several runners-up and ties noted. The M. E. Sunday School won five gallons of ice cream for leading the flag parade.
Notice calls all members of the threshing ring led by the undersigned captain to assemble at William Bray's home on Monday evening, July 17.
Fire at Ridgeville department store owned by Fred Drake and E L Pierson caused about 17000 in losses. The blaze started in the basement fed by oil soaked floors. A stranger fled the scene as cops seized him. investigators suspect incendiary arson and prior robbery. Insurance partly covers the loss.
Misses Sleen Paxton Idah Woodard and Messrs Frank Mathias Merl Whitecotton spent a Sunday afternoon at Matters Park sharing conversation and leisure.
In the Fraizer home the wedding of Henry Behne of Oklahoma City to Eva Fraizer occurred Thursday evening. Rev. J O Campbell officiated. The couple will honeymoon through the east and Canada before settling in Oklahoma City after August 1.
The schedule lists monthly hostesses and program committees for the Ladies Aid from July through June. Each month names three hostesses and two committee members with repeats in several entries.
Mayme Mildred Rumple daughter of William and Florence Rumple born December 26 1910 died July 5 1916 at age five years six months and nine days. The obituary notes her sweet cheerful life and faith in Jesus. Funeral held Saturday July 8 at 10 am at U B church conducted by Rev E O Brown with interment in Van Buren cemetery.
Misses Helen and Lillian Howard spent part of last week with their grandparents at Hartford City. Trustee C R Witmer has a new Ford.
Van Buren township bonds for the erection of the Anderson school house were sold last week to the Fletcher American National bank for 4155 dollars, with the bank also paying for bond printing. Dr and Mrs O S Crawford and daughter Lois of Marion visited E H DePoy and family Sunday afternoon.
