Gas City vote keeps wet by eight in close turnout

In Grant county Gas City narrowly opts to remain wet by eight votes amid claims of illegal ballots and arrests. Montpelier also votes dry by eighteen, ending years of water fights with a parade and floats marking the drys final push.

Squirrel hunting season opens in Indiana

Indianapolis July 5 The squirrel hunting season runs July 1 to November 1 with no bag limit per hunter. Farmers welcome the move as rifles and shotguns are readied. Other open seasons include waterfowl September 1 to December 15 and prairie chicken October 15 to November 11.

LeFavour and Theibert wed at Marion church

At high noon on Wednesday June 30 Miss Melina Theibert of Marion and Chester LeFavour of Van Buren married at the First Christian church in Marion. The ceremony was simple with attendants Mamie Gessler Hazel Britton and Howard Freiberger. The couple left for Indianapolis and will reside in a newly furnished Marion home.

Township Advisory Board Elects Huff to Fill Vacancy

The township advisory board met Saturday and elected C C Huff to fill the vacancy caused by E W Landers resignation and move to Marion. Trustee Witmer to qualify Huff for his new position. meeting set for Saturday July 31 to receive bids for school supplies and award contracts.

Neighbors Aid Farmer Ill With Typhoid Fever in Plowed Field

Neighbors and friends gathered at Watt King’s home Friday morning with plows and bees to plow his corn. Helpers included Ed Bocock James Benson David White Richard Messersmith Ie Hinds and two teams Ralph King Russell Chaney Harmon Carter Ora Roberts and Mr Trout. Mr King is slowly improving from typhoid fever under a physician. Merditu their little son also has the disease. Ice cream and cake were served at David Chaney’s Friday evening to guests David Murphy and family Wm Delamore and family and Vaughn Chaney. Ella and Alta Delamore and Branson Harris are visiting Fairmount. Wilson Hamilton and daughter were Landers callers Saturday evening. Mary Elizabeth Addie Campbell’s two year old is recovering from swallowing an open safety pie. doctor hopes no serious results. Isaac Smith and family hosted Sunday dinner for Chester Holmes and family and John Smith and family. James Gard and wife visited Ernest Lewis and family near Pleasant Plain. Martin Carl and wife hosted dinner with T Riggs and wife and Ruby Slusher granddaughter, Levi and Mrs Delamore and family from Marion plus Knightstown Orphanage grandchildren. Elza Vanarsdale and wife called on Silas Sands. Mrs C L Renbarger hosted Ladies Aid Society. After crochet for Mrs F J Green a social hour followed. August meeting planned at Mrs Tom Daugherty. Dissolution of Local Drug Firm Ends Partnership

Dr L V Conwell senior partner of Conwell Pax ton druggists bought Mr Paxton's share in the store on Friday. Co partnership dissolved by mutual consent with Conwell to continue operations as before. Paxton undecided about his future, with offers but hopes to stay in Van Buren.

Towels and Cups for Each Pupil in Indiana Schools

Indiana state board of health issues order banning common drinking cups and towels in public schools. Each pupil must have an individual towel or sanitary towels must be provided, and an individual cap or sanitary bubble fountains. Pencils also banned for shared use. pupils must keep their own pencils.

Five youths blast pipe in 1915 patriotic stunt

Eugene DePoy Noble Riley Merle Whitecotton Hershel Banion and Leo Daughtrey boasted of their blast by shooting a gas pipe. The pipe split and one end shattered Farley’s grocery plate glass, costing about 25 dollars. The incident served as a memorable 1915 misadventure.

Grafanola contest prizes and standings noted

Mrs L E Kilander won a watch in the Van Buren Furniture grafanola contest along with other prizes. Frank Korporal took a silverware set on June 30. July 7 prizes include knives and forks. The notice lists contestant standings with multiple large figures and mentions ongoing voting support from Van Buren Furniture Co. and the News-Eagle.

Farewell to the Mowing Blade in Van Buren

A quiet Fourth in Van Buren with stores closing at noon. Hardware and drug stores stayed open all day while the News-Bogie closed early, joking about preferring light items to mowing weeds and severing ties with a scythe.
