Jackson township hosts a Jubilee at James Woods one mile north of Dillman and two miles west of McNatt on Wednesday July 12. The event features races for all ages, a tug of war, a fat and lean man contest, basket dinner at 11:00 am, songs and recitations, a short address by A. T. Merriman, and two baseball games at 2:30 pm.
The Van Buren Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster Rev E E Lutes plan a weeklong outing to Tippecanoe Lake starting Monday July 10 Reports for trip participation due to Assistant Scout Master Claude Dillon by 6 pm tonight Ned Conwell chairs the committee and will join the group The party leaves the parsonage Monday morning at 5 and will reach the lake for late breakfast They will bring cooking pans typical of scout trips and anticipate a great time.
At a Marion meeting of the Democratic county central committee the executive panel formed campaign committees for Grant County. Headquarters open July 16 with a broad campaign to follow, per the county chairman. Van Buren township representation includes Finance J. E. Riley, Advisory C. R. Witmer, Registration Johnson Boxell Frank White and Charles Huff.
The Van Buren town board fixes Friday evening July 7 as the date to let the contract for the extension of the waterworks system.
The Van Buren Boy Scouts held tag day Saturday and raised about thirty dollars. The money funds a flag and flagpole for the library with any surplus used for Scout expenses. The iron pipe flagpole was crafted by Mr. Fremont Doyle and is described as a fine job.
The Fourth of July in Van Buren was peaceful with most businesses closed. People visited lakes rivers and woods or stayed home to rest while other towns offered attractions.
The Boy Scouts led flag raising at the library on Saturday evening at seven. They donated the flag and pole to the library. Scoutmaster Rev. E. E. Lutes presented the flag and library president C. R. Witmer accepted it. The Conwell Orchestra provided music and girls trained by Mrs. Trace Draper staged a drill before a flag salute. Rev. Lutes praised the Boy Scouts and urged more boys to join.
Neighbors and friends hosted a surprise shower for Mr. and Mrs. Russell Losure at their country home southwest of town on Friday evening. Guests listed include Mrs. William Bray and daughter Margaret, Mrs. Wm. Miller, Mrs. Geo. Akers and children, and many others. A lunch of sandwiches and lemonade followed social time, with the couple receiving numerous pretty and useful gifts.
The Central Church of Christ holds Bible School at 9:30 a.m. and services at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Rev Balif Stultz, a graduate of the School of Missions in Indianapolis, preaches and will soon depart for active mission work in Southern Africa.
An adjourned Farm Federation meeting is set for Saturday at 7 30 at Library Hall with important business on the agenda. The summer membership drive will resume as counties report changing standings led by Shelby Laporte Noble Montgomery Hamilton Allen Wayne Wells Clinton and Grant. The Producers Commission Association moves forward with cautious ground checks. The Chicago Commission Association opened offices June 19 in Livestock Exchange Building room 357 with expert staff. Van Buren Shipping Association readies for late summer and fall marketing of live stock with improved yards for quick safe unloading and loading. The Wool Pool shows a 300 percent rise in volume and high producer satisfaction. Co operative selling and buying is seen as a future farming solution. Be a Booster.
The Epworth League of the Methodist Church plans a Pep program next Sunday evening with a 7 45 start. The Sunday schedule includes 9 30 Sunday School 10 30 morning service with choir and new hymns and a sermon on A Hymn of the Cross 3 00 Junior League and 7 45 program featuring Yells songs and a reading by Lucille Stackhouse plus prayers and remarks. Several relatives and friends honored Mrs Catherine Johnson with a 77th birthday surprise party and pot luck supper social afterward.

The regular monthly meeting of the Monroe Township Agricultural Association is postponed from Tuesday evening to the following Tuesday evening July 11. Plans for a Monroe Township fair will be discussed and a August fair hoped for with attendance urged.
The Masonic Band gave its first summer concert to a large crowd, delivering a varied program of marches waltzes overtures and patriotic pieces. A second concert is planned for next Thursday with a fresh lineup and another invitation for all to attend.
Oscar Bartlett broke his left leg above the knee when a wagon tongue struck him with force on Saturday, causing a serious injury.
Don Richardson hosted a stag party on Wednesday June 28 at his home. The event led to the formation of the Tiger's Club with Don Richardson as president Marcus Roberts as vice president Lewis Paxton as secretary and Lewis Green as treasurer. Original members include Kenny Nelson Foster Campbell Lewis Green Don Richardson Lewis Paxton Ralph Roberts and Ralph Duncan. The club will meet weekly with Ralph Duncan named chairman and the next meeting at Kenneth Nelson's home.

Roy Myers held an aluminum ware sale last Saturday starting at two in the afternoon. The store quickly sold large and small items and drew many buyers, with five clerks kept busy throughout the day. The event was advertised exclusively in the News-Eagle, which Myers credits for boosting his grocery meat and cream station business.
Linn Kern formerly of Van Buren now based in Decatur has made an enviable year in athletics. He starred as left forward for Kalamazoo College basketball, winning the state championship and earning a miniature gold basketball. Kern also helped a Michigan relay team set a state record and claimed several top finishes including a 100 yard dash win. At a Decatur Fort Wayne GE meet he was high point man despite late arrival. Friends of Kern celebrate his success and hope for his high school coaching return.
Mr. and Mrs. Willis Strange of Chicago visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lou Calvin were in a collision three miles east of Valparaiso. Their car skidded on crushed stone, hit a ditch and barbed-wire fence. Mrs. Strange suffered lacerations. Mr. Strange had minor bruises. They went to Van Buren for treatment.
