An unnamed Klan speaker addressed residents at the Van Buren opera house Tuesday night. He praised white supremacy and Protestant Christianity while denouncing Catholics Jews and foreign and Black groups. Applications cards were signed ending with a warning against law violators seeking membership.
Grant county fans will see Young America take on Van Buren Produce Company five at Civic Hall Marion on Thursday evening February 1. Van Buren beat Young America earlier on their home floor, when Beck was injured.
Blue Devils beat Jonesboro 37 to 27 after a 18 15 overtime win. Losure Black and Rumple starred amid injuries to Nelson Sparks, with Ballard Stimax and Waggaman contributing despite setbacks in a fast paced junior game.
Mrs. Leroy Trout formerly Myrtle Lowery died last Saturday of pneumonia at her Majenica home. The ceremony at Merenica Christian Church drew a large crowd. Her husband Mr. Trout fell ill with pneumonia Monday and remained seriously ill. The couple had wide family ties near Van Buren.
Arrangements advance for a two day farmers institute and poultry show hosted by the high school Agriculture class on February 21 and 22. State speakers headline the opening day with Mrs. John V. Spindler of Grabill Indiana and Mr. R L Thompson of Topeka Indiana delivering lectures on farming, markets, and youth programs. Thompson advocates pure bred stock and sustainable practices while stressing quality and education in rural schools and agricultural societies.
Wayne Knitting Mills aims to extend a flawless city league streak as they host Van Gren Produce Go. Saturday night January 26 with Waggaman back in form. the Roosters seek an 18th win in 22 games while 30 cent admission applies.
Mrs W H Plummer and Mrs Ida Miller were called to Marion by the death of Mrs Alice Sutton sister of Mr Lon Robb known here. Mrs Miller remained for the funeral at Summitville on Monday afternoon returning home Monday evening.
Mr Jas B Griffith narrowly escaped death when his auto was struck by a freight engine at the Main street Clover Leaf crossing. Rainy conditions and curtains on the car hid the engine as it shifted freight cars. He suffered facial injuries and loss of ear tissue but is improving at home southeast of Van Buren with expected recovery.
Van Buren Produce team dominant against Huntington Buddies and Montpelier, with Kern locking down Shug Stroup. Meiling and LaRue score for Van Buren as Wayne Knit looms undefeated Saturday, promising a tougher test.
Mrs. Wm. Sullivan and her son Arthur of Manton Michigan arrived Monday to attend the death and burial of Mr. Wm. Sullivan and are with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sullivan.
Sandy Watson a former News-Eagle printer now with the Huntington Press performed a trombone solo on the Press broadcasting station Wednesday evening.
LE Furnish, who started the Van Faren Produce Company three years ago, has sold his interest to R L Ditzler of Huntington by mutual consent. Ditzler will operate the business in Van Buren with about fifty employees in peak times and will retain current staff where needed. Furnish plans to consider several proposals and will not announce his next move yet, adding that patrons will receive fair treatment under new management.
William Sullivan born Van Buren Indiana April 19 1887 died Bert Burnette Texas January 19 1923 aged 35 years 9 months. He was an oil mechanic and superintendent of the workmen later. Survived by wife Addie Beaver son Arthur mother Rosa Ann sister and brother Charles. Funeral Wednesday 1 30 at Methodist church Rev E E Lutes. burial in Van Buren cemetery. Pallbearers named H H Scott William Kirkpatrick W F Williamson Earl Bratton Dean Paxton Mitt Williamson.
Central Church invites the public to Sunday School at 9 30 a m and preaching in the morning and evening by Rev John T Bridwell of Coldwater Michigan.
Mr and Mrs Fred Clark with daughters Martha Jane and Helen visited Mr and Mrs John Hiesterse at Bluffton on Sunday evening.
The Methelist Church revival in Van Buren continues with 7:30 PM services and preparation week. Song leader Hyram Vinson, an Asbury College alum and veteran gospel singer, shares a career spanning Texas to Indiana and a World War I service record in England and France.
The Farmers Trust Company annual meeting on January 18 re-elected directors J. E. Riley Wm Doyle H F Sanderman C C Huff G G Richardson E E Farr J H Farr O G Willey and Clinton Cramer. A banquet for stockholders and families was held with over sixty attendees and entertainment by members of participating families. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Chas Reed Mr Chas Snyder of Upland and Mr and Mrs A N Doyle of Marion.
