The federal fuel order closed factories and mercantile shops for five days amid a citywide shortage. Groceries meat markets remained open while barber shops and hardware stores closed. Schools also shut, coal stock is tight, and officials urge compliance while private consumers buy only a half ton.
Frank Doyle reports his son Verl arrived safely in France by telegram on Monday afternoon. Verl is the third Van Buren youth to reach France, following Forrest Higgins and Sam Renick who had gone over earlier.
F. A. Braton & Co. advertises the highest market price paid for poultry and hides. The firm invites buyers and sellers to contact their offices for current rate quotes and settlement terms.
Citizens of Van Buren cheered as over 300 soldiers in full uniform marched through town from Detroit to the train on North First street. The detachment, training at Waco, Texas, headed toward Newport News and then France, with two men narrowly missing missed trains during a quick boarding rush.
The Van Buren basketball team defeated Converse high school 33 to 29 on their floor despite a misread score. Mellings starred with effective field goals and strong all around play as the locals earned a hard fought victory and returned home happy with the win.
Trains number 5 and 6 due at 10 37 pm and 3 47 am were annulled temporarily on Wednesday according to local agent Skerd. The road’s capacity is taxed transporting troops at present.
Montpelier resident Ed Beecon reported on Friday that his son A.C. Beecon is wrestling with a mumps case while visiting town.
