Blizzard Paralyzes Town and Delays Rails In Deep Freeze

A western blizzard blanketed the region Friday night with twenty below zero and heavy drifting. Rail and interurban lines were crippled, the Clover Leaf yarded trains sixty hours late, and isolation persisted as workers struggled to clear tracks toward Van Buren and Bluffton. Local residents braved the cold, with several accounts of stranded cars and courageous commutes to reach Marion and settlements nearby.

Obituary: Rachel G Brown Octogenarian Passes Away

Rachel Cordelia Brown daughter of Caleb and Margaret Comer was born July 23 1832 in Holland New York and died January 14 1918 at her daughter Mary Lytle s home in Van Buren Indiana aged 81 years 5 months and 21 days She married William Brown then Michael Brown and leaves children Emmett Chas E Brown Jennie E Peters and Mary J Lytle along with nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren She joined the United Brethren Church in Pleasantville Pennsylvania and lived a devout Christian life Funeral services were held at her daughter s home and her remains were interred in Pleasantville Pa.

Train Rescued From Drifts Returns to Delphos

A force of about one hundred men dug the train out of the drifts and freed the stranded engine. By five o clock Sunday evening the train moved again and returned to Delphos Ohio. A few passengers were aboard and were cared for locally before being sent back to Delphos.
