The Methodist Sunday School reported 217 present last Sunday with an optimistic outlook for a record year. Miss Ilo Elzey of Ossian sang a beautiful solo and the Young Married People class led by Mr. W F Williamson drew 37 attendees as it launches a membership campaign for next week.
The Van Buren public library board met twice this week and ordered books and magazines for the new structure. Opening is likely in about six weeks with interior painting underway and a basement assembly room for public gatherings. A rest room and toilet facilities will serve patrons. a librarian has not yet been chosen.
Dairy agents of the U S department of agriculture appointed five women contesters. A Masonic meeting held somewhere in France represented forty two of the forty eight states of the United States.
Sergeant Harry Boxell reports from Creverbacher Luxembourg on Thanksgiving 1918. He describes crossing into Germany, viewing Verdun’s devastation, and miles of land plowed by shells with cut woods. He anticipates home soon, and asks for family news and his father’s address.
The paper carries the year 1918 report by L. M. Camblin town clerk and treasurer of Van Buren. It credits the city administration and Camblin for strong records while noting the added duties of library construction and library fund handling on the city clerk and treasurer.
Revival services have been in progress at the Methodist Church since Sunday with Rev. J. W. Zerbe of Marion preaching and Rev. Campbell leading praise. The meetings are well attended and will continue for some time with spirited singing, beginning each evening at seven o clock.
A nephew, Lt Dale Kelley, recounts training in Saumur, service with the 82nd Division and 319th Field Artillery, and the St Mihiel and Argonne drives. He describes difficult marches, horses exhausted by bombardment, and raids by enemy planes, ending with ongoing combat memories.
Converse High School reports end of first semester with exams last Thursday and Friday. The 6 foot 4 inch Van Buren opponent hindered local play as the Converse team, led by guards and forwards, lost to a taller foe. Rock Creek Center visit on Saturday promises a strong Huntington county matchup at 7 30 p m. A fire alarm disrupted classes briefly before students returned to study and plans for last semester changes remain undecided.
German helmet bowie knife and belt are displayed in the Conwell Drug Store window as souvenirs sent home by Forrest Higgins a Van Buren soldier who served in France. The items were captured during the St Mihiel drive and a steel helmet belt bowie knife and skull cap are shown.
The constitution amendment for national prohibition was ratified by both chambers of the Indiana legislature. The Senate recorded six dissenters: one Republican and five Democrats.
A historical note states that all gold coins in circulation would weigh roughly 900 tons. The figure reflects total circulating gold coin weight rather than reserves or refined gold.
