Van Buren defeats Berne 62 41 in a hard fought game on their floor. Stroup leads with 14 points and Wintrobe scores 21 as the Knights of Pythias host a community night with a pot luck and program at the K of P Hall.
Mr. O G Sargent has closed the bakery here and is moving the machinery to Montpelier to start in partnership with his brother. The town will miss the quality bread, and local grocers regret the loss of cooperative enterprise that kept the bakery shops in town.
Lucille Brogan, famed harpist, joins Gladys Anderson for a Lyceum and chautauqua program in which the two performers promise verve and variety. The piece highlights Brogan’s mastery of the modern three thousand piece harp and Anderson’s acclaimed readings. Bluffton Phi Delts to play Van Buren in a strong lineup featuring Doyle, Stroup, Kevine, Wintrode, and Jerzuson after recent wins.
Masons held a public apron lecture by Ned Conwell with Rev E E Lutes speaking on The Philosophy of Masonry. A large turnout enjoyed a two course banquet after an impressive installation led by Rev J O Campbell with many members and families in attendance.
Catherine Palmer born February 8 1838 in Dark County Ohio died December 30 1821 at her daughter A L Woodard home aged 83 years 10 months 22 days. Survived by three children Jona Valoser Sarah Wadar Willis O D seven grandchildren two brothers and an aunt. Funeral January 1 1922 at A L Woodard home with Rev J O Campbell. Interment Balsley Cemetery Roll.
Fletcher Chapel Ladies Aid Society elected officers for the coming year. President is Mrs. Josie Stallings, Secretary Mrs. Tressa Howard, and Treasurer Mrs. Gertrude Culbertson. About twenty members attended a pot luck chicken dinner at the home of Mrs. Mary Lugar and Mrs. Nettie Nye. Reverend A W Pugh and wife were present.
Mr E W Landess funeral director and embalmer of Campbell Missouri writes the News Eagle that the paper is always read first by his family. He notes mild weather with no snow or freeze, only heavy frosts and compares their winter to Indians.
The University Trio presented a fine program at the Central Church of Christ on Friday night. Each member proved herself an artist before a full house with late arrivals standing. The Crescent Class organized the entertainment and the event was a success in every respect.
On Saturday night January 7 the North Grove Aces visit Van Buren A A. A strong five, they beat Young America earlier and split two games with them. Verl Doyle returns at back guard with Stroup to form a strong guard pairing.
Ray Baker guard for Van Buren leaves for Kansas City to study a trade. It was his first basketball season but he impressed as an immovable, able guard, earning captain Creviston's praise and the respect of visiting forwards. His return as a team member would be welcomed by fans.
Mr and Mrs Clint Camblin and daughter traveled from Arkansas to stay with Mr and Mrs W B Camblin and relatives for a month. They have returned to New Wilson Oklahoma and subscribed to the News Eagle, resolving to leave here.
The Van Buren township Farmers Institute meets at the Van Buren opera house Friday at 9 30 in the morning. A fine program features Van Buren High School music and Raspberry Band. Mrs Elizabeth Stanley state president WCTU and Mr R A Ogg Greencastle speak on timely topics.
K Frank Swartz, formerly a Converse baker and three years farming near Van Buren, has rented the vacated Sargent bakery room and will open a first class bakery here as soon as the room is ready. He is in town to inspect the oven and equipment to ensure suitability for an up to date operation. Vegi Buren residents urged to cooperate.
