Summitville Corporal to Speak for Red Cross Benefit

Corporal Joe Cullen of Summitville, a Gordon Highlanders veteran who took part in the Battle of the Somme and the Ypres sector, will address a local benefit for the Red Cross next Wednesday night. He sustained a permanent injury from the bloody Hill 70 assault, and is remembered by Germans as the Ladies of Tell.

Forrest Higgins in France Sends Letter Home to Family

The paper prints a letter from Forrest D. Higgins, a member of Gen Pershing's expeditionary force, dated January 24 1918, describing his experiences in France and news from home. It notes his grandfather I B Dicken on receiving the message.

Boys Working Reserve Aids War Effort In Indiana

A 1918 notice in Van Buren Indiana calls 16 to 20 year old boys to enroll in the United States Boys Working Reserve. It urges farm, mine, shipyard, and factory labor to support the war effort and to report for a statewide survey under Governor James P. Goodrich.

Campaign to buy new song books raises funds

The M. E. Sunday School fund for new song books neared $40 as members earned a dollar each in diverse ways. Charley Wight walked ten miles to avoid a livery hire, Mitt Williamson hauled hogs to Indianapolis, Palmer Ice clerked at a sale, and others contributed through odd tasks and notary work.
