Railroad Men Demand Higher Wages and Standards
Detroit August 19. General chairman of The United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employers and railway shop laborers approves a new wage and working agreement. It seeks about one dollar per day rise plus time and a half for overtime and seniority-based promotion. The plan covers US Canada and Central America with about 800000 workers. A referendum is set for August 34. Union officials claim 99 percent favor the proposal and warn of a general strike if unmet. The proposed $1 daily increase would cost railways nearly $190 million annually, aiding lower paid maintenance of way workers many earning less than 2.60 a day. Standardization of rates is demanded due to varying pay for the same work across roads.
