A telegram to Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith confirms Private Neal Smith infantry, killed in action November 1. Neal, longtime local in the drawing business with his father, left March 29 for Camp Funston and later joined the 89th Division. His death saddens a wide circle of friends who admired him.
Mrs Luther Hill of northwest of Pollock died suddenly Sunday evening after suffering a stroke of apoplexy. She had been visiting a neighbor and returned home seeming well before her death. She was widely known and the family has the communitys deep sympathy.
Last month to redeem War Savings pledges in Putnam county with a $270000 quota. About $40000 remains unredeemed as meetings and watch events are held through December 14 to finish sales. Officials urge completing pledges before year end to support servicemen and government funding until bond sales resume next spring.
Over five days the city battles a contagious illness with 25 to 30 flu like cases prompting school closures. Health officials enforce home quarantine for suspected cases with strict penalties for violations while urging calm and cooperation to prevent further spread.

Frank reentered military service and may pursue government work. Under a new president order of November 2 corn oats barley and rice millers must obtain a license from the Food Administration with no fee.
A public notice invites any person able to perform practical nursing to contact Mrs Daisy Riggs of the nursing committee. Compensation is promised at God wages.
Frank Norval departed today for Hot Springs South Dakota to spend the winter.
Mr and Mrs David Probasco of near McKinley schoolhouse east of town received a dispatch last Wednesday stating their son Thomas R Probasco died of fever on October 12 after sailing. He reportedly died two days after landing on the other side. Tom was well liked and his loss deeply grieved by friends and family.
The forecast covers December 2 to December 7 with generally fair conditions. A potential unsettled period is forecast for Sunday night or Monday in the upper Mississippi Valley and again around the middle of the week. No decisive temperature changes expected.
