The Lakota Board of Education asks voters in November to approve a 4.536 million bond issue to fund two new schools, a bus maintenance garage, a maintenance center, and related facilities. The plan includes real estate purchases and site work but excludes current operating costs.
The Lakota School District board passed a 5.68 million dollar budget for the coming year, forecasting a 455 thousand dollar deficit. They approved a 5.3 thousand dollar roof project for Union Elementary, funded partly by insurance. They also set lunch prices higher and accepted resignations while hiring seven new teachers.
At Union Township meeting clerk Marco Osner reported Country Community Developers bought Strauss Field and the Becket Road diamond used by Liberty Union Youth Organization. The developer will not sell or rent the fields and will use them for three summers with no liability to injuries. Gundler warned LUYO and PYO may need to relocate when Barrett Road Park opens in three years as the township plans a new park to absorb teams.
Willard Johnson, 32, a part time minister, was found guilty of assault and sentenced to 60 days in jail by Judge William R. Hendrickson after a preliminary hearing in Area Two. He was bound over to the Butler County Grand Jury on one count each of rape and kidnapping for a Jan 18 attack on a 17 year old girl. She testified Johnson assaulted and raped her and choked her, then released her and urged prayer for him. Johnson did not testify and pleaded not guilty through attorney Richard Koehler. he remains jailed and will appear in Fairfield Municipal Court.
A man faces two counts each of rape kidnapping and assault in a Tuesday court appearance after Fairfield Judge Henry Bruewer set bond at 10 000 per count totaling 60 000. The case involves two other teenage girls and investigators probe the 15 year old Cynthia Beuerlein homicide in Springdale with Beuerlein’s body found June 15 along Beckett Road.
Union Elementary School on Cincinnati-Dayton Road in West Chester suffered roof and library water damage during a Wednesday thunderstorm. Custodian Ken Hamilton said a roof section blew off while more than an inch of water flooded the library. Dr. Darrell Root of Lakota Schools estimated building damage at $2,000 with contents damage likely higher.
Twenty-one Union Township firefighters earned certificates after completing seventy two hours of instruction in fire fighting skills. Chief George Hall received a department certificate from instructors Bill and McGuire, with the program run by the State Department of Education and Great Oaks Fire Training Academy.

Butler County 4-H Safety Speech contestants faced a locked Edgewood High School as heat rose and dates clashed. Patrolman Eugene Kelly guided the group to Trenton Presbyterian Church basement where Martha Surface won senior division and Diane Grieselhuber led junior division. Surface will advance to the Dayton area contest in July.
