A late night drive on a dark country road encounters a white figure dangling from a bridge. The scene, linked to a Halloween stunt, prompts the sheriff to report multiple calls about a hanging mannequin while residents wonder if the prank was aimed at scaring couples.
Union Township's largest weekly paper covers local notices and events in Maud Ohio for the week of August 24 1976 Vol 4 No 39. The eight page issue lists community notices and local updates from the townships and surrounding area.
Union Township hosts its biggest event on September 4 sponsored by the Bicentennial Committee. The day begins after a 10 a.m. parade along Cincinnati-Columbus and Cox roads to Hopewell School, featuring puppet shows food booths games dancing and float displays by nearly every township group. Floats array near the reviewing stand then on display south of the school.
Liberty Township trustees met briefly on August 16 with no mention of the fire department dispute. They approved pursuing blacktop bids for the new firehouse parking area and received monthly reports from the life squad and fire department. The life squad logged 17 July runs including medical calls and transports. the fire department assisted multiple townships and fought two fires. Next meeting is September 13 at 8 p.m. with local festival displays and booths planned.
The Butler County Fair midway buzz continues with 4-H judging pie contests dairy cattle swine and the Ohio Draft Horse Pull. Daily events include Junior Talent Contests harness racing tractor pulling and a grand parade set for Friday afternoon. Admission is 1 with free entry for 12 and under when with an adult.
Rita Gerber and Julie Koehner named Butler County Fair royalty by Peggy H. Simmons. Gerber, 16, Edgewood High junior, 4-H member since youth, competes in district Park Queen and joins sheep projects. Koehner, 16, Lakota junior, 4-H sheep program participant and Lakota Band feature twirler, to enter Ohio State Fair Ladies Lead Class. Aug 22 27 fair week includes ribbons and parade appearances.
