Bond OK Clears Way for Coyote Valley Dam Start

Sonoma county voters approve a 5.65 million bond to finance the Coyote Valley dam north east of Ukiah. Army engineers estimate bid call late 1955 or early 1956 with 1 million dollars planned for property rights and relocation work. If Mendocino approves its 633200 share, Sonoma’s total will be adjusted accordingly.

Leek Resigns. Ukiah District Names New Principals

The Ukiah Elementary School District board accepted Frank F. Leek’s resignation as Northside principal after 18 years and named Robert Cannon as successor, effective end of the current term. Jack Ernes will become Nokomis School principal once construction completes. Cannon and Ernes both hold San Francisco State College degrees and will bring administrative credentials after summer.

Mape's Ranch in Potter Valley Sold for 190 000

The 2 247 acre E T Mape ranch in Potter Valley is sold to Clyde Moffett of Oakland for 190 000 dollars excluding cattle. Moffett plans improvements and continued cattle ranching, with the property able to handle about 500 head. Mape retains possession for the season.

New City Budget Studied and Airport Survey Begun

City council discussed a preliminary budget exceeding one million dollars at last night’s meeting. City Manager Charles Keene leads the budget study with department heads and expects final approval by June 1. Airport survey work started this week, with FAA forms filed and federal aid anticipated for a 1,000 foot runway extension at a total project cost of 40,000 dollars, split 46 percent city and 54 percent federal.

Scouts to Begin Circus Ticket Sales Saturday

Plans for the Scout Circus proceed with a May 21 event at Carl Purdy hall on the fairgrounds starting 7 p.m. Scouts begin ticket sales May 14 at 8 a.m. in front of the Palace hotel after leaders pick up tickets. A parade occurs May 14 at 2 p.m. from the Veterans Memorial building with a Sea Scout color guard and Mayor Herman Runkel participating.

Salute to Spring Flower Show Opens in Mendocino County

The Carl Purdy Memorial Flower Show arrives at Purdy Hall, 12th District Fair Grounds, Friday through Sunday. County clubs, art groups, and Purdy family plans showcase non competitive displays of local flora and a history exhibit featuring rare works by Maynard Dixon and Whistler pieces.

Potter Valley Spring Festival Opens with Parade and Rodeo

Potter Valley hosts a two day festival with parade baton twirling crowning of the festival queen and a Sunday rodeo. The Potter Valley volunteer fire department sponsors the event with all profits supporting the group. A flower show runs Saturday and Sunday in the Grange hall.

Dr. Anderson Called to Air Force Active Duty

Dr. Donal Anderson has been called to active duty in the air force and must report to Gunther Air Force base near Birmingham Alabama on June 2. After three weeks of training he will be sent to March Field California for the rest of his service. He came to Ukiah in 1952 to open his dental practice. he and Mrs. Anderson with three daughters are visiting relatives in Michigan. Dr. Eugene L. Mabley will operate the Anderson office at 405 W Stand ley street during the service.

Four North County Students Reach Un B of A Finals

Seniors from Del Norte Humboldt Mendocino and Lake counties compete in the northern California finals of the Bank of America Achievement Awards on May 13 at Barberville. Winners include Douglas Burke Mildred Brown Sandra Maude Men Docino and Birdie Carlson from Ukiah Arcot Feiog High. 36 students from 200 high schools in 39 counties advance to Sacramento finals. Awards total 9400 with top prizes 1000.

Decision on Dam Participation By Ukiah Area

Mendocino county officials delay a decision on Russian River zone involvement in the Coyote Valley dam project. A petition for district formation must be filed and signed by 15 percent of voters representing 15 percent of assessed valuation before residents can vote on participation and bond approval. The board will not act until such petition is presented.

Notices on two mine claims filed near Salt Creek

Two notices of location for mining claims filed in County Recorder Alta Ballou's office list claims on Salt Creek about five miles southeast of Dos Rios. Red Cross Fund Campaign Set In Mendocino County

The Mendocino County Red Cross Chapter names Mrs Richard Jacobsen as drive chairman for a September month long campaign. It will run as a semi mail solicitation across Ukiah Boonville Covelo Hopland Laytonville Potter Valley Redwood Valley and Willits with residential mail and business district canvassing. The drive follows the absence of a March national campaign.

Mendocino Faces Key Vote On Coyote Dam Share

In Sonoma County voters backed the Coyote Dam plan, approving over 13 million dollars to fund their portion. Mendocino County faces a required 633,200 dollar match to participate, with leaders urging a countywide vote to decide whether to join the project and secure water rights.

Top Art Flower and Antique Displays For Carl Purdy Festival

Ukiah Garden club and sponsors prepare the Carl Purdy Festival show at the 12th District Fairgrounds opening Friday at 1 pm. Hours run 1 to 10 pm Friday, 10 am to 10 pm Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm Sunday with 50 cent adult and 10 cent child admission. Proceeds fund grounds beautification around the floriculture building.
