William G and Elsie Emett settle out of court with Arthur Earl Dodd for $52,634.62 in a collision case. The accident involved a pickup driven by Emett and a truck driven by Dodd on Highway 101, about 171 miles south of Ukiah, in October 1953.
The department of motor vehicles has completed renewal of vehicle registrations and starts Friday enforcement. City police and the California Highway Patrol will require display of 1955 license plates or receipts. Drivers with tabs missing will be warned. those without proof face penalties.
Planning for the third annual Redwood Region Conservation Council Junior Logging Conference moved forward at a Saturday meeting. The Mendocino Woodlands venue 11 miles east of Mendocino will host field trips demonstrations and camp lectures focusing on industry conservation forest practices and fire prevention. Key industry conservation and education leaders will direct the program with students from high school and college forestry classes and Boy Scout groups invited to attend.
Saycees reports the Miss Redwood Empire contest sponsored by the Mendocino and Lake counties junior chamber of commerce. The winner will go to the statewide Miss California pageant in San Francisco. Contestants must be single under 23, may be a high school senior but graduate by June 1955, and have resided in Mendocino or Lake counties for at least six months. Applications may be received at 677 North Street.

City officials continue first study of two Main Street sites for a future civic center. Mayor Leonard Nix said yesterday the council, expected to meet last night, may discuss proposals. One site lies directly south of the Ohen Plumbing and Electric building with 153 foot frontage and 350 foot depth, the other at Main and Clay streets about 170 by 250 feet. A five member committee proposed selecting a Main Street civic center site, aligning with the Safeway property sale on South School Street to KE Field Co of Oakland for 95 000 dollars.
A representative of the California Franchise Tax Board will be at the Ukiah courthouse on March 30 to offer free advice and help in preparing state income tax returns. Individuals earning $2,000 or more single, or $3,500 or more paired, must file by April 15.
Ukiah Chamber of Commerce hosts a timber resources conference with speakers from San Francisco theater, Masonite, Union Lumber, and Pacific Gas and Electric. They stress the need for sustained timber supply, ongoing plant operation, and waste wood utilization to keep investments and jobs secure in Mendocino County.
Professor Emmanuel Fritz warned a crowd of about 50 in Ukiah that county timber must be conserved. He urged an economic survey, a county forestry department, and using ranch land to grow timber, citing Humboldt County as a model. Fritz described how overlogging in the southeast and near Redwood forests mirrors the need to balance timber with agriculture. He stressed, Youve got so much timber, youre cutting it fast, divide the two and you have your answer. The discussion followed a meeting at George M. Mann apartment above the Ukiah Theatre. Dwight B. Grass sues Albert E. Taylor in Mendocino County Superior Court over a truck collision north of Willits on June 17, 1954. Grass alleges Taylor blocked Highway 101, forcing Grass to the shoulder and over a 30 foot embankment. He seeks damages for contract losses, injuries, equipment damage, and loss of use totaling $20,756.80.
Mendocino county 4 H club and Future Farmers of America members entered cattle hogs and sheep for the 1955 Grand National Junior Livestock Exposition at the San Francisco Cow Palace April 26 to 30. Entries include Ukiah exhibitors Dick Parducci and Bill Parducci with Angus animals and Arthur Witter with a pen of ten fat hogs, plus several local FFA members and 4 H youths sending hogs and Hereford cattle for the five day competition.
The Ukiah Chamber of Commerce reports thirty six new members joined during a recent recruitment drive to support an ambitious 1955 program. Names include Sheriff Reno Bartolomie, Redwood Products, Rambler Motel, Tri angle Milling, Welcome Wagon Inc, Club Calpella, Richardson's Frozen Food Lockers, Ukiah Printing Company, Munnell and Sheriff of California, and other local businesses and services.
The Emma Redemeyer estate in Ukiah is valued at 1,126,138.04 with real estate at 156,546 and personal property at 969,676.04 including stocks bonds and bank deposits 188,409.62. The south half of the block between Perkins and Standley streets is offered for sale. Heirs are six nieces and nephews: Gertrude White Fort Bragg Evelyn Foote Ukiah Whitney Redemeyer Richmond Dorothy McConaha Tye Texas Hubert Redemeyer San Francisco Fred Redemeyer Laytonville.
Volunteers are asked to join the Ukiah ground observer corps posting at the Palace hotel. Duties are a few hours monthly with registration at Palace Sport and Hobby shop the civil defense office in the courthouse or city hall.
Plans for a new juvenile hall will be modified by Stone and Malloy after a Monday conference among the board of supervisors county probation committee and California Youth Authority. Cost about 140000, 20 rooms plus nursery activity rooms kitchen dining laundry offices staff quarters and outdoor play space. When the new county hospital is finished the present hall will become a home for the aged and chronically ill.
Examinations for Ukiah Police Department officer positions will be held Saturday at Ukiah High School. Led by Donald K. Musser starting at 9 am, the test aims to create an eligibility list for future appointments as vacancies arise, according to Chief George Smith.
Mendocino County Farm Bureau plans a series of meetings to study a proposed enabling zoning ordinance. The first session, on April 8, will be led by the tax and legislation committee and include Dr Vaughn Ellsworth, director of research, among attendees.
Everett L. Hubbard, a Willits junk dealer, is to have a new trial date set Friday morning in superior court by Judge Hale McCowen. Hubbard, charged in 1952 with incest involving two teenage daughters, was found on the Golden Gate Bridge with a note claiming death by own action. The death by own action theory was dismissed, bail of 2000 was forfeited, and the case was dropped pending Hubbard's location. Sheriff searches followed a tip that Hubbard’s daughter may be in San Luis Obispo. He is to be tried on the original incest charge with possible added bigamy charges after presenting aliases and remarriage in California..
Two army engineers will discuss the Coyote Valley dam at Ukiah Kiwanis Club next Tuesday. County and city officials, Chamber of Commerce leaders, and dam opponents are invited to attend at the Maple cafe. The event is a Kiwanis public service with a broadcast and a Q and A period after talks.
