March 19 marks the start of the annual Girl Scout cookie sale led by Mrs. E D McCreary cookie airman. Troop chairmen receive selling aids and will train their groups in salesmanship as deliveries by Langendorf United Bakeries Inc. are made soon after baking. On the sale's final day cookie booths will be in downtown stores with cookies priced at 50 cents each.

New Trial Denied in Ukiah Water Suit Case

Boy Drowns In Well Near Laytonville
A %-year-old boy died Tuesday after entering a 20 foot well at the Thomas Charles Steynoff home near Laytonville. His mother, at work, notified authorities and he was retrieved by Hal Norrin but revived efforts at Howard Memorial Hospital failed. The incident occurred on the Branscomb road about a mile from Laytonville.

Rubber Tires Save 2 Workers From Electrocution
A Masonite plant yard incident left a log crane ripping three 60,000 volt lines. Rubber tires on the crane insulated and saved the operator and a riding helper from electrocution. PGE crews restored power by 6 pm. Several bystanders remained unharmed.

Building permits totaling 1,462,342 were issued in February and the first 11 days of March per Carl Hinds city building. The nine day timber land dispute ended Tuesday afternoon with testimony filling over four average length novels. Superior Judge Hale McCowen presided and briefs are due April 29 for case submission. The principals were Empire Redwood, Gualala Redwoods, and Alvin M. Boldt over 26,000 acres of timber land and a mill valued around $2 million in the Gualala area.

State to Make County Employee Salary Survey
The board of supervisors approved hiring the state personnel board to conduct a classification and salary survey of all county offices. The survey by Cooperative Personnel Services will run early May and finish for the June budget period, covering 250 positions at about 2500 dollars, with adjustments of ten dollars per position above or below 250, and include a salary range schedule.

Dogs Warned of Poison Bait for Rabies Control
County health officials issued a warning that poison is placed in various county areas to kill animals and potentially expose dog owners. Pet owners urged to keep dogs tied up as followup rabies clinics were set for Laytonville Covelo and Willits. Earlier in the week about 1 237 dogs were inoculated for rabies and two animal heads were received from Dos Rios for analysis. Three people are being treated after bites from suspected rabid animals.
