Campaign seeks signatures for Coyote Valley Dam District petitions

The Coyote Valley dam citizens committee met at Maple Café to plan weeks of signature gathering for a bond election to fund a $633,000 dam project with Sonoma county. Petitions are at the Chamber of Commerce, signatures do not vote. The panel acts as fact finder while assessing valuations and tax implications for Mendocino and Sonoma counties.

Plywood Worker Dies in Freak Mill Accident at Calpella

William Teipher Matthews aged 39 was killed at 2 p m Tuesday at the Durable Plywood Mill in Calpella Mendocino County in an unusual fatal accident. A slackened guy wire tied to a smokestack swung free during wind gusts and wrapped Matthews causing him to be lifted into an overhead sprinkler system. Investigating Inspector Edward Axt deputy coroner described details and a fuller report appears on page six.

Russell Foote Honored At Mendocino Dinner

Russell D Foote was honored at a testimonial dinner in Ukiah on Friday June 24 as he retires after 33 years as Mendocino county farm advisor. More than 100 Wool Growers and Farm Bureau members attended and Leon Hooper served as toastmaster. Max Rawles presented Foote with a shotgun as a token of esteem from the Wool Growers association and Farm Bureau.

Ukiah Officials Weigh Parade For District Fair

Grand Jury Exonerates Mendocino State Hospital Death

The grand jury met with Mendocino State Hospital staff to probe the June 16 death of Wong Loy alias John Nam, a 57 year old patient. Autopsy suggested ruptured liver and two cracked ribs with hemorrhage as contributing factors after Loy attacked an attendant with a rock and was restrained. The jury found no indictment and reported the case after witness testimony from about 80 in the ward. Loy had been transferred from San Quentin Prison after a murder conviction and had a prior sentence of one year and 21 days.

Appeal Planned After 75000 Verdict In Mast Mill Case

A superior court jury awarded 75000 to Lauretta Rasmussen and her two children in a damage suit against Ben Mast mill for their husband and father Wilbur Rasmussen’s fatal March 10 1951 accident at the Mast Mill. Mystery Farm Named By Five Five

Busch to Serve As MC At Class Meet Saturday
