Ukiah's 1954-55 fiscal year totals show 453 building permits issued with a value of 2,956,320 dollars, surpassing the prior high of 2,361,448. New dwellings accounted for 60 permits at 762,935 dollars and non residential work for 67 permits at 312,032 dollars.
The Ukiah Jaycees start a fundraising drive to obtain two portable or one large iron lung for Ukiah. Residents may donate as they wish by painting house numbers on curbs during July 12 13 and 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. Iron lungs will be kept in Ukiah to serve polio patients in emergencies.
A dedication event for Riverside Park on the Russian river at Vichy Springs road bridge features a 1 p.m. barbecue, swimming and picnicking, and a local talent show. The Ukiah Junior Chamber of Commerce and Ukiah Toastmaster club organize activities to introduce residents and raise funds. Community support comes from the Ukiah Police Officers Association Mendocino County Labor Council and many local groups. Sgt. Arnold Book chairs the event Ray Williams leads the barbecue and Ben Abel handles ticket sales.
More than 250 people attended the Ukiah Union High School classes of 1921 to 1924 reunion at Muniggpal park with a barbecue and gram. Senator James E. Busch led the event and 15 prizes were awarded to attendees including longest and shortest, heaviest and lightest, and other notable records. Special thanks were expressed to merchants and helpers, with Irene Wegner Hanson traveling 500 miles to attend.
Mendocino county reports its 13th polio victim for 1955, Robert Donald Mantooth, son of E. B. and Mrs. Mantooth of 107 South Pine. He is under treatment at Sonoma County hospital, with non paralytic diagnosis. Nanette Furman in Vallejo Kaiser Foundation recovering from polio, able to sit up briefly, not paralyzed, expected to stay several weeks.
June filled its role as the month of brides with 40 couples obtaining licenses at County Clerk W. J. Broaddus office. The total trailed last year when 45 licenses were issued. Dan Cupid beat Divorce by more than two to one. Seventeen divorce complaints and two annulment petitions were filed.
Ukiah's 1955 56 tax base is estimated at 7 055 478 with a county total of 57 983 038 including a utility roll of 8 583 790. Unsecured and secured roll breakdowns list amounts for road districts Fort Bragg Ukiah Point Arena and Willits with a combined total of 49 399 248.
Exhibitors for the 12th District Fair must submit entry forms by July 15 for feature booths funded by premium money. The August 25 to 28 event on the Redwood Empire highway near Ukiah offers 31,185.75 in total premiums, with 3,525 allotted to feature booths sponsored by Granges 4-H Future Farmers and Farm Centers. Entry blanks are available in the administration building at the fair grounds.
Mendocino county health department will provide the second polio shots Friday from 8 am to noon at 880 North Bush Street Ukiah. Only children scheduled for a second shot may attend. no first shots will be given.
Superior Judge Hale McCowen awards to Dave Needle and Son, Los Angeles salvage firm, ownership of a sunken cargo of lead and zinc from the Pacific Enterprise wreck off Point Arena. The suit, filed in 1954 after salvage began in 1954, awards $5,337.29 damages from A. P. Settle and $3,771.33 from American Smelting and Refining Co. for salvaged cargo sold to the smelting firm.
A portion of the Clarence Cox ranch four miles south of Ukiah was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Caputo for 192000 in a deed filed by Alta Ballou. About 150 acres of the pear orchard property east of Highway 101 were transferred. the Coxes owned it about 50 years.

Prizes of 3 2 and 1 dollars for first to third in sections like ceramics metal leathercraft sculpture weaving woodworking and fancy free. New this year gift wrapping plus prize features. packages must not exceed 16 inches in any direction.
Russell D. Foote concluded 33 years of service as Mendocino county farm advisor last Thursday night at 5 o clock. He was succeeded by William H. Dunnalen Divunds. Foote promoted sheep and wool improvements and led the county’s Merino export program. A UC College of Agriculture graduate, Foote joined the county staff in 1922 and served as extension director since 1945.
A complaint filed in Superior Court by the division of labor law enforcement seeks wages owed to 22 former employees of Ted Morris Sawmill. The suit names Ted Morris, the Ted Morris Sawmill, and Three Sisters Timber Co Inc as defendants with total wages claimed at 4986 dollars plus interest for work done two years ago at Cedar Creek on a lumber operation.

Taxable sales in Mendocino County reached 10.82 million dollars in the first quarter of 1955, up 23.76 percent from a year earlier, with only eight counties ahead. Statewide first quarter taxable sales hit 3.903 billion, aided by auto and farm implement demand and a post recession rebound. Self assessed taxes totaled 117.1 million, boosting quarterly state revenue to 361.96 million, with year total expected above 490 million.
Dr. John O Raffety won a one year contract as medical director of Mendocino County hospital after a tense board session. The board tentatively approved 9600 dollar annual salary for an assistant county physician and endorsed full time staff and equipment needs including nurses, anesthetist, dentist, lab tech, pharmacist, and x ray tech.
Ukiah will receive 36 206.82 from the motor vehicle license fee apportionment for the period December 1 1954 through May 31. Mendocino County's share totals 142 750.33. Other county cities receive Willits 15 411.08 Fort Bragg 18 057.25 and Point Arena 2 114.30.
Police Chief George Smith enforced a 37 year old ordinance prohibiting dice in public places in Ukiah. The May 1918 measure, signed by H B Smith and town trustees, closes two poker games and pinsball payoffs while a 1948 ordinance backs the crackdown.
Groundbreaking ceremonies signaled a 1000 foot extension to the Municipal Airport. Attending were Mayor Herman Runkel, city council members, airport commissioners, City Manager Charles Keene, and City Engineer Douglas Cruickshank. Arthur B. Siri Construction of Santa Rosa will perform the work, targeting completion on October 1.
