Rescuers lift injured after light plane crash near Rupert Ridge

Four aboard a single engine plane crashed after takeoff from Garner's ranch airstrip in upper Long Valley north of Rupert Ridge. Bob Hatton, from the San Carlos area, hiked out after four hours of rugged terrain with two fractured ribs and a cracked pelvis. Rescue crews coordinated by Clearlake Oaks fire and Lake County sheriff reached the wreckage around midnight. Hatton and pilot R Link were treated at Redbud Community Hospital.

Pilots Freed Face Split Return Plans From Hanoi

Three pilots Edward Elias Markham Gartley and Norris Charles were released May 17 to an American antiwar group in North Vietnam. They sent cables to President Nixon asking U S authorities not to interfere with their trip home. Defense Secretary Laird accused Hanoi of making propaganda tools of the pilots and relatives in Hanoi.

Strong plans wild animal farm amid covelo rezoning

Mendocino County planning commission reviewed Jim Strong's request to rezone 4000 acres northwest of Covelo to forest conservation and create a preserve. The project includes enclosures for wolves bears and other wild species, a three year fencing plan, an 8.5 foot perimeter fence, and a future zoological garden near Covelo with public space.

F86 Sabrejet Crashes Into Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor

A privately owned F86 Sabrejet crashed after takeoff at a Sacramento airshow, hitting Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor and killing 22 people including many children. About 16 injured, with desks and cars damaged and chaos as families fled the burning wreckage. Pilot Richard Bingham survived with injuries. plane belonged to Spectrum Air Services.

United States Proposes UN Air Hijack Treaty and Terror Export Pact

Secretary of State William P. Rogers urged the United Nations to sponsor a new air hijacking treaty protecting diplomats and officials and to suspend service to nations that fail to punish or extradite hijackers. He also called for a treaty on exporting international terrorism and outlined steps toward arms talks with the Soviet Union and broader strategic balance in Europe and global diplomacy.

Five hurt as cars collide on Eastside Road and Highway 1

Over the weekend five people were injured in two crashes. A northbound pickup on Eastside Road near Dry Creek bridge struck a southbound car driven by Litha Hilbert Jones, age 66, of Talmage. three people in the Robinson vehicle were injured. In a separate crash on Highway 1 north of Anchor Bay, John Carr and Chuerit Lauer collided after Carr crossed the center line. passengers Stanley Sundstrom and Jack Lauer were injured. James Madden, 66, of Alameda, died after his van left Highway 20 near Clear Lake Highlands and struck a tree. his widow Maybell Madden survives.
