Kefauver Sees Nixon Power Issue in Election Campaign

Estes Kefauver told a Marquette rally that a main campaign issue is whether voters want Richard Nixon to gain ultimate national power. He argued Eisenhower risks being used to keep Nixon in control, warning the Old Guard backs Nixon instead of Eisenhower. Kefauver urged voters to consider four more years for retired millionaires.

No Bid for Old Hospital Bldgs During County Meeting

County Board of Supervisors met with four members present and approved routine actions. They fixed boundaries for a lighting district, authorized a sewer contract with Willits, planned tearing down part of the old county hospital to create a driveway, changed a polling place, reviewed courthouse furnishings costs, and hired Marion A. Wright as health department stenographer. A road survey through 288 acres near Ridge and Fish Rock roads was discussed for possible county conveyance. Supervisors Poulos Scaramella and Hartley left for the state supervisors association in San Diego.

Willits Millworker Held For Investigation After Death

A Willits millworker Billy Gene Hill is held for investigation into the death of Melvin Patereau after a barroom fight on September 16. Patereau, 25, suffered a severed facial vein and died at Howard Memorial Hospital about 2 15 this morning. An autopsy was ordered.

Nixon Campaign Hit By Sore Throat Delays Oklahoma Stop

Vice President Richard Nixon fights a mild influenza and laryngitis as he travels to Oklahoma and Texas. Doctors say he will skip the Oklahoma City speech and appear at a party rally instead. His illness stems from campaign strain and recent personal losses, but his doctors expect him to continue the 32 state, 16 day tour if complications do not arise.

Ukiah Native Serves in Fort Riley Parade Role

Specialist 3c William D. Stambaugh son of Mr and Mrs Robert B Stambaugh of Ukiah participated in a parade with the First Infantry Division 16th Regiment at Fort Riley Kansas He is a mail clerk in the regiments First Battalion Headquarters Company entered the Army in May 1954 and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri Stambaugh graduated from Ukiah High School in 1951.

Willits council approves weekend free parking plan

The Willits City Council approved free parking from noon Saturday to 8 a.m. Monday in the downtown business district with meters unused and police patrols to deter permanent weekend parking. The panel also granted Frontier Days supporters parking on airport grounds during events, despite protests from airport officials about crowding during a Fly-in.
