House panel balks at expanding Redwood Park costs
The House Appropriations Committee declined to take a position on a bill to enlarge Redwood National Park California citing high cost and urged an amendment to let Congress predefine spending for workers displaced by the expansion. Space Shuttle Enterprise tests Microwave Landing System
At Edwards Air Force Base the Space Shuttle Enterprise completed a third free flight testing the Microwave Scanning Beam Landing System. Astronauts Fred Haise and Gordon Fullerton controlled the system for part of the approach as ground transmitters steered the shuttle along a glide path. Static radio interference and light turbulence accompanied the flight as the craft released from the 747 at 24 100 feet traveling 287 mph.

Lake Oldster found slain in Lucerne home
84 year old Gedney Clarke Robinson was found fatally stabbed during a welfare check at his Lucerne residence. Police report robbery as a possible motive, noting a missing 1974 green Ford sedan, license 016 KDD, and no suspects at this time. The body was taken to Jones Mortuary in Lakeport.
