Fuel allocation urged over heating shortage fears
Washington report warns that without a mandatory fuel allocation this winter heating fuel could face a chaotic scramble if weather is colder than normal. The Joint Economic Committee staff study notes tight supplies and a great risk of shortages, with New England, the Middle Atlantic states, and the upper Midwest expected to be hardest hit. Senator Humphrey urged immediate action, warning shortages could reach 10 to 15 percent and halt life in affected regions if refinery output and imports decline amid severe weather.
