Parking Meter Begins In City Lot At Standley And Main

The city will begin charging 25 cents for all day parking tomorrow at the Standley and Main street lot. A meter installed today will operate from 6 am, with receipts allowing all day parking and multiple entries. Colored tickets will designate days and be checked by police. Two Wilits men escape plane crash near Willits airport. Ferris Whitney, former mayor, and Harry Saulsberry were slightly injured and treated by a private physician. The plane stalled about 50 feet up, landed in a creek between the runway and Don Coleman’s property, and was cushioned by heavy underbrush.

Tiny Ryan to Attend LA Fair and Dog Trials

Tiny Ryan will travel to the Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona next week while in southern California for the American Legion Department of California executive board meeting in Santa Ana. He plans to visit Big Bear Lake to watch hunting dog field trials in which his nephew Dr Alfred Ryan will compete.

Supervisors Award Two Road Bids on Westport and Boonville

The county board awarded two road construction bids totaling 15154 dollars. Elwood Baxman of Fort Bragg won the Westport project with 8372 dollars and E A Forde of Santa Rosa took the Boonville job at 6782 dollars.

Board Defers Action on H S Classroom Bids

Ukiah Union High School trustees opened ten bids for a new classroom Tuesday night. Due to the high bid count and bid presentation issues, the board deferred a decision to a later meeting. The low bid from C H Smythe of Lakeport was 193007 with deletions about 14000.

Army Recruiter to Visit Ukiah Tomorrow

A representative of the U S Army recruiting service will be in Ukiah all day tomorrow to accept enlistments and provide information about the army enlistment program or technical school program. Master Sergeant Byron Bowman, Santa Rosa recruiter, announced today. Bowman will be at the Army Reserve office at 311 South Main Street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SACRAMENTO UP An eminent Dutch water engineer Bremond questions the feasibility of a proposed San Francisco Bay barrier to create a freshwater lake He warns that salinity and water quality standards may fail in a barrier pool and notes contamination of Delta flows from return and drainage waters and possible saltwater intrusion The board of consultants votes to a six point study to evaluate flood flow restrictions limited channeling and the potential for an independent canal to move Sacramento River water across the Delta plus pumping and diversion works for irrigation and preventing salt water intrusion before next year’s legislature session.

Fort Bragg man convicted of lewd conduct with minor

George W. Tibbetts, 73, of Fort Bragg was found guilty by a four woman eight man jury of two counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a Fort Bragg minor girl. The jury of eight men and four women deliberated after hearing the case from Judge Hale McCowen, reaching verdicts at 7 35 p m. Tibbetts was defended by Dewey Turner. Merle P. Orchard led the prosecution.

Northwestern California is fair today through Thursday with a few showers north of Garberville today. Local morning coastal clouds, inland warming to lower humidity Thursday. Coastal highs range around Ukiah 74, Santa Rosa 75, Napa 75 with lows near 46 to 48. Fort Bragg area expects partly cloudy today and tonight, fair Thursday, with northwest winds 10 to 20 mph along the coast.

Americans freed after 18 months in Red China jail

Two US war correspondents and a young merchant sea captain flew to freedom after 18 months in a Chinese jail. Richard Applegate Donald Dixon and Capt. Ben Krasner described brutal captivity with days without daylight no word on fellow prisoners and constant questions about germ warfare and invasions while receiving thin food and no cigarettes.

Mendocino Farm Bureau Opens With Big Turnout

Grand opening of the Mendocino County Farm Bureau building on Neworth Highway drew hundreds. Russ Whitcomb of Potter Valley won a 14-foot farm freezer as the grand prize. other prizes went to ticket holders. Representatives praised the event, broadcast on KUKI, with Western music by Jimmy Dolan as master of ceremonies.
