Gubernatorial race finances probe ties overdrafts to campaign

Federal regulator testified that LaBelle Lances bank overdrafts exceeding 100000 in 1974 may have funded Bert Lances gubernatorial bid. The Senate hearing heard Serino discuss overdrafts with the Justice Department after press reports quoted Mrs Lance claiming the funds aided his 1974 Democratic nominating campaign in Georgia.

Attorney General Griffin Bell branded a New York magazine report alleging he sought to influence the Lance banking probe as absolutely false and a patent libel. Percy dragged into probe sparks Capitol furor

White House press secretary Jody Powell acknowledged he told reporters about rumors that Senator Charles H. Percy, ranking Republican on the Senate panel probing Bert Lace finances, misused corporate airplanes. The disclosure drew GOP fury and Powell apologized.
