Huge Dos Rios blaze surrounds containment near Dog House fire
More than 700 firefighters threw a line around the Dog House fire which burned about 7000 acres of woodlands and brush since it began near a hunting camp southeast of Dos Rios. The blaze, four miles by three, started by children lighted matches and threatened Dos Rios before backfires and air support contained it. No structures were lost and injuries were reported only aboard a logger rescued by a Helitack helicopter. Containment expected by 8 tonight with control by 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Covelo Man Under Guard After Big Bend Ranch Shootout
Clifford Eugene Anderson 20 of Covelo is under guard at Community Hospital charged with assault with intent to commit murder assault on an inhabited dwelling and damage to telephone lines following a Saturday shootout at Big Bend Ranch 20 miles north of Covelo on Minah Road near the Eel River. Deputies say Anderson argued with Thomas Rubattino 35 of Santa Rosa over authority. Rubattino and two friends Ray Austin 57 and Richard Ferrari 33 confronted Anderson inside a house. Anderson fired several shots wounding Rubattino in the arm. Rubattino wrested the rifle and wounded Anderson in the left thigh as he fled. Inside the house Anderson tore the telephone from the wall. Rubattino tied Anderson to a fence and notified authorities. Anderson was taken to Community Hospital by ambulance and operated on Saturday afternoon. his condition described as fair.

Truck Driver Killed in Highway 101 Head On Crash
A 34 year old Willits truck driver Thomas Jerry Lawrason died from injuries after a head on collision on Highway 101 north of Ukiah. Delroy Jarose 42 of Eureka, the other driver, was in fair condition in Ukiah General Hospital ICU. Police say Jarose saw a deer, braked hard, and skidded into Lawrason’s northbound lane. Lawrason had delivered lumber for Bud Dee Transport Co and worked for Moffitt Wholesale Lumber previously, leaving a wife Frantis and two children. Both trucks were totalled in the wreck.

California returns to capital punishment under SB450
