Parade in Ukiah Draws Thousands for Shriners Event

Throngs lined School and State streets to watch a colorful Shriners parade staged by Shrine rs of Aahmes Temple. Grand marshal Don Coleman led a procession of 75 ceremonial candidates and dignitaries in sleek convertibles, with bands and rich costumes from Aahmes Temple, Santa Rosa groups, Napa Oriental band, and Pomo Shrine Club. Local officials included Al Fraga and William M. Huffman of Oakland as top Aahmes leaders, drawing more than 1000 visitors to Ukiah.

The Agriculture Department apportions $67,010,000 to states and territories for school lunch programs for the new school year. Arizona receives 413,304 dollars, California 3,079,934, Idaho 300,573, Oregon 562,850, Utah 384,691, and Washington 816,423.

Ukiah 14 year old confesses Yokayo School fire

A 14 year old Ukiah boy admitted setting the Yokayo school fire on May 22 that caused over 65000 dollars in damage. Lieut George Barnes and assistant probation officer Harry Pressley with Fire Chief Al Bechtel led the investigation, aided by Fred Carlson. A second boy was questioned. three suspects were narrowed down, and the youth confessed after two hours in juvenile hall. The fire endangered the original building. three alarms and many volunteers responded.

Labor Day Highway Toll Drops To Six Year Low

Traffic deaths during the Labor Day weekend totaled 511, the lowest three day toll in six years, with drownings 85 and plane crashes 13. Michigan used 1500 national guardsmen to curb fatalities, and overall fatalities nationwide showed a downward trend despite a late Sunday surge. Local worst accident involved a two car head on collision near Tipton Indiana, as hot weather drew crowds to beaches and resorts.

Voters urged to register before Thursday deadline

County Clerk Broaddus urged voters in Mett docino county to register for the November 2 election. The Ukiah office will stay open 8 30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow and Thursday evening until 9 p.m. for last minute registrations. Registration deputies will be on hand in Willits Fort Bragg and other locations with officials named to accept registrations.

Bunyan Fiesta Sees Sheriff's Posse Parade

Mendocino County Sheriff's Mounted Posse joined many locals in the Paul Bunyan Days parade and La bor Day Fort Bragg celebration. The Air A Squadron hosted a fried chicken dinner at the Fort Bragg Flying Club, with a loggers breakfast Monday and a buffet at Frank Peterson's home. About 4000 watched logging contests won by George Moen, James Moen, Danny Sailon and Mike, plus the Gay Nine revue and Marine Band concert.

Burglar Steals 360 From Hotel Room Says Potter

Roy Potter reported to police that a burglar entered his New State Hotel room Saturday night and took 360 dollars from his clothing. The loot consisted of one $50 bill, fifteen $20 bills and several one dollar bills with no other items disturbed.

Pop Warner dies at 88 in Palo Alto hospital

Glenn Scobey Pop Warner, credited with revolutionizing football through single and double wing schemes, died at Palo Alto Hospital at 12:05 p m PDT after a year long battle with throat cancer. He coached for 44 years and was well known in the sport.

Pear Harvest Ends in Mendocino County Bartlett Yield

Preliminary figures issued by county agricultural commissioner Ted Eriksen Jr. show the 1954 Mendocino County Bartlett pear harvest at 20,712 tons total, with 16,270 tons sold to canners and 4,442 tons shipped fresh. The 1953 crop totaled 6,639 tons, and the 1946 peak was 23,282 tons. The 1954 harvest ran from July 28 in the Ukiah area to September 3, concluding with last deliveries to the cannery from Hopland.

Logger Killed to Hold Chico Rites Thursday

Funeral services are planned Thursday for William LeMoigne 64 of Chico who was fatally injured when a tree snapped while he attempted to pull his tractor back. The accident occurred Saturday afternoon and LeMoigne was taken to the former resident’s home for services.

New York UP reports Bud Fisher creator of Mutt and Jeff died today after a long illness. The San Francisco Chronicle notes Fisher first created the strip in 1907, bringing early comic duo Mutt and Jeff to readers nationwide.

Nationalists Hit Amoy in Attack on Chinese Reds

Nationalist Chinese forces staged a daylong air and sea assault on Amoy area targeting Red artillery and troop barracks. They claimed destruction or damage of more than 100 Communist military junks, including a gunboat and five large motor junks, with hundreds of warplanes and strong naval forces involved.
