Golden anniversary honors Ukiah native Horton family
Judge Halé McCowen Jr and Virginia attend the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Harry L. Horton and Isabel Horton in Fresno. Horton, raised in Ukiah and a 1903 Ukiah High School graduate, later coached track at Stanford and toured with an All American rugby team in 1910. He worked as a civil engineer in South America and married in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1923. Out of town guests included daughter Oneita Stacks and husband Donald and son Leonard of San Jose, nephew Mervin Horton and daughter Gene Brown from Grants Pass, cousin Edwards Horton and wife Josephine from Sacramento, plus other relatives. A buffet, entertainment, champagne, and a toast marked the celebration, with breakfast the next day prepared by Cornelia Hernandez and family.

California State Grange officer installation pianist named
Alice Trimble a longtime Ukiah and Mendocino County Grange musician was chosen to play at the installation of California State Grange officers in Fresno. She leads the Club of Demeter No 1 and presides over annual convention breakfasts as the group expands from 26 to more counties. Plans for the 1974 National Grange convention seed California prominence with thousands of candidates expected for the degree in Sacramento.

Ukiah Unified School Menu For Next Week
Ukiah Unified School District releases the next week’s lunch menu each Friday to help families plan meals. Each student receives half a pint of milk with the meal. The week features Spanish rice with salad and buttered green beans on Monday, pizza with cabbage salad on Tuesday, a manager’s choice on Wednesday, hamburger on bun with spinach on Thursday, and spaghetti with mixed vegetables on Friday.

Senior Center Menu For Next Week In Ukiah
Meals offered at Greater Ukiah Senior Citizens Center include meat loaf with peas and salad, pot roast with vegetables, fried chicken with whipped potatoes and carrots, turkey with dressing, cranberry sauce, fish or creamed turkey with peas and carrots. Serving times are 11 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.

A baby shower hosted by Joanne Peaslee on S Dora Street honored Kathy Bogner and her upcoming child due in November.
