No Russ troops to mid East crisis eases at UN

United Nations reports the Soviet Union will not insist on sending troops to the Middle East as part of a UN emergency force. Egypt had urged U.S. and Soviet troops, but Moscow and Washington moved toward a nonaligned powers plan. Kissinger warned against unilateral moves while stressing the alert was precautionary and that a peacekeeping force could be formed without major powers participating.

Floating dock planned for Lake Mendocino creates public access

The Corps of Engineers opens bids for a 50 foot floating dock beside the main launching ramp at Lake Mendocino Drive. The deck will rest on styrofoam blocks with safety rails and be free to the public, with completion aimed for December 1. Additional improvements include paving the parking lot and installing chemical toilets.

Board plans study of GP open space element

A draft of the county General Plan open space-conservation element will be reviewed at a special meeting of the board of supervisors and planning commission on Monday Oct 29 at 10 a.m. Present will be a Lampman and Associates representative, the citizens advisory committee, and the technical committee. All interested persons are invited.

Carrier Collecting Payments for Ukiah Daily Route

The Ukiah Daily reports that the newspaper carrier is collecting today with requests for payment in advance. Customers are asked to pay three months in advance to cover motor route costs.

Fort Bragg surveyor booked after assault on officers

John Kelsey Grant a 32 year old Fort Bragg surveyor was booked at the county jail after a Tuesday night that led to assault on a Highway Patrolman and other officers during a drunken driving arrest. He initially agreed to a blood test, refused at the hospital, signed a consent slip with another officer’s name, and allegedly struck a nurse before being subdued. He remained jailed overnight in Fort Bragg and was moved to the county jail Wednesday.

Bay Area warned of quake prediction by amateur seismologist

State and local officials alerted San Francisco Bay Area communities after an amateur seismologist from Pasadena predicted a major quake on a near term date. The notice cited a Richter range of 7 to 8.3 and drew mixed opinions from Caltech, USGS, UC Berkeley, and the California Division of Mines and Geology.

Nixon Cancels News Conference To Focus On War Crisis

President Nixon abruptly cancels a televised news conference set for 9 p.m. EDT to concentrate on the Middle East crisis. He had planned a Watergate focused address but postponed it amid tense Middle East developments and notes from the Soviet Union.

Four rescued from Eel River crossing in Trinity County

A 14 year old girl and three others, including two Laytonville hunters and a 68 year old man, were ferried across the swift Eel River by a rescue party led by Mendocino and Trinity County officials and Forest Service personnel after being stranded in a cabin near the Yolla Bolly Wilderness area. The crossing occurred in two stages during rain and snow with the dog carried separately. The group reached safety at Indian Dick station after more than an hour on foot and horseback.
