Ford and Carter Prepare Final Bicentennial Debate

President Ford and Jimmy Carter travel to Williamsburg Virginia for the last debate of the Bicentennial campaign broadcast to millions. The two candidates, in a wide open format, aim to address voters as 11 days remain. Ford plans a cross country tour ending in Grand Rapids Michigan, while Carter returns to Plains Georgia for a rest before a nationwide last week swing. Both appeared together at the Al Smith dinner in New York City, delivering light remarks during an election year charity event.

March of Dimes walk-a-thon set for Ukiah tomorrow

Ukiah hosts a 20 mile March of Dimes walk starting 8 a.m. at city park with routes to Talmage and back. Four rest stops, refreshments, prizes for top finishers youngest and oldest, plus a 10 speed bicycle for the top fundraiser. Coordinated by Mendocino County Volunteer Bureau. last year 127 walkers raised 5488 dollars.

Phase two of trial begins Monday jury finds murder guilty

A Superior Court jury of eight women and four men found Mark Peter Ray, 19, of South San Francisco guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Elizabeth Koetz, a 55 year old Bay Area nurse. Ray and runaway Sharon Nicolini, 14, were involved in the Feb 19 kidnapping from a South San Francisco shopping center, with Ray driving to Willits where Koetz was killed. Nicolini testified as a passive participant and implicated Ray in the murder and after the crime, stating she helped place the victim’s watch and ring with Ray. The jury deliberated about nine hours before returning the verdict.

Public Defender challenge to conspiracy in murder case

Public Defender Joe Allen argued in closing that the count 2 conspiracy to commit murder was invalid because Sharon was a passive participant. Ray showed little emotion during the trial as jurors left. The jury will return Monday for the two day special circumstances phase, with the defense and district attorney both predicting about two days. Allen refused to say if Ray would testify, but promised a vigorous Phase 2 defense and listed several expert witnesses from Berkeley and Mendocino County Mental Health Services.

Planning commission deadlocks over Yorkville Estates division

Yorkville Estates parcel split into 13 lots, 4,100 acres total, range 160 to 977 acres, southeast of Boonville and northwest of Highway 128 along Fish Rock and Hibbard Roads. Commission deadlocked 3 3 on denying the plan after four hours of review and EIR adequacy comments.
