Harrah wins zoning split for 25 000 acres in Mendocino County

Industrialist Robert Harrah gains planning commission approval to divide 25 000 acres into four parcels in eastern Mendocino County. The action, taken before final zoning, covers 10 320 acres, 6 280 acres, 8 363 acres, and 320 acres near Hearst and the Eel River, with 8 363 acres rezoned UR 20 for 20 acre riverfront lots.

DA files welfare fraud cases in county cooperation

District Attorney Duncan M. James announced seven felony and two misdemeanor welfare fraud complaints filed with Social Services. Suspects are sought in Ukiah Fort Bragg Leggett Point Arena Covelo Laytonville Westport and Willits. Public tips to the Social Services unit are urged.

Son of Sam suspect pleads for indefinite commitment

David Berkowitz known as Son of Sam interrupted a New York Supreme Court hearing to plead for being sent away for life. He claimed demonic possession and mental incapacity while psychiatrists argued he is paranoid and unfit to stand trial for the July Brooklyn murder of Stacy Moskowitz. He urged the judge to lock him away forever and said he would accept the death penalty if offered.

Veterans Day Observed What Schools and Offices Do

Federal offices and post offices will be closed on the holiday. Home Federal Savings closes while banks remain open and downtown stores operate. Ukiah Unified students have an in service day. Potter Valley schools stay open. Adult classes run on the usual Monday schedule. California observes Veterans Day on November 11.

Park funds described to influence U S Congress on Korea

Kim Hyong Wook testified that in 1969 Tongsun Park spoke of giving tens of thousands of dollars to many U S congressmen to aid South Korea. The former Korean CIA official said Park noted funds from rice deals were used for officials including lawmakers as part of a 1968 plot led by former Rep. Richard Hanna to distribute money on Capitol Hill.

California approves gambling petition for two cities

Secretary of State March Fong Eu approves a 1978 ballot petition to allow Nevada style gambling in Adelanto and Lakeport. The plan creates a People's Experimental Gaming Act Commission to issue permits and extend pari mutuel wagering statewide. Robert Wilson of Sherman Oaks promotes the measure.

Geothermal Plan Meeting Set for Ukiah This Monday

A public workshop on the Geothermal Resource Impact Projection Study GRIPS will be held Monday at 7 p m at the Veterans Building Seminary Avenue Ukiah. The study covers the Geysers Calistoga KGRA across four counties Lake Sonoma Mendocino and Napa forming a GRIPS commission to guide development.
