Ferry collision sinks passenger boat on Mississippi River
The George Prince ferry carrying over 80 workers from oil and chemical plants was struck by the 664 foot tanker Frosta near Destrehan Louisiana and sank within 15 minutes. Sixteen bodies recovered and at least 50 missing, feared dead, hundreds of passengers and cars trapped. Coast Guard divers searched the wreckage as cold 40 degree water hampered efforts. River closed to shipping and dozens of survivors were pulled from the water soon after dawn. President Ford had visited Destrehan three weeks earlier on a riverboat tour through Louisiana.
